I liked Harold Kornhaus well enough but not everyone on his crew, I will speak to that later. There were two separate pieces of work that I asked Harold to consider and give me a quote. My first priority was the kitchen at this time and I felt I made that clear. When they arrived, Harold was all ready to do the other piece as well. I had not given him the approval to do so and felt he was being a bit pushy. He did not seem happy about it, but that's too bad. Several other steps have to be completed before we do the bigger job and I was not ready to move to another mess before this one was complete..
The lead man on the job was Alan. Alan seemed to be in charge of the project and I communicated with him freely. I explained my vision of the project, showed him the area where they could stage their tools and mentioned that there was a restroom in the back of the condo that they could use. While some of the master bath had been renovated, it was not complete. Water had not been hooked up in the sink, for instance. He acknowledged my request and said it was better than most places they have to use.
Alan is an amazing worker, with excellent skills in this area of construction. He is also QUITE tall, which helps when working on ceilings. Harold was punctual and professional but I was especially impressed with Alan. Harold brought another person on the job, but I had to ask that he leave, before the work was done . Immediately, this person was walking ALL OVER my house (when the work was in the kitchen), he was looking in each room, looking in boxes and asking me many personal questions. This made me very uncomfortable. I went outside to find Harold but he was gone, so I told Alan that the other guy was making me uncomfortable. Alan spoke to him and the interaction stopped. Later in the day I had to leave for an hour or so to return a car to the airport. I returned as Alan was finishing final clean up. The others were gone. Later I took a moment to see the work that was completed while I was away. The room was a mess, with plaster splashed everywhere including all over MY ladder and MY folding table. There was even plaster in a bedroom far from the kitchen. WHAT? I guess it is not uncommon, but they inadvertently put a fresh piece of drywall over the outlet for the stove. That was easily fixed the next day. But, it was also CLEAR that someone used the toilet in the master bath room because the lid was up and there were urine drips all over the place. Needless to say, I was not happy. I left a voice mail message for Harold and he called me in the morning. The unlikable worker was the one who used the wrong toilet (not a surprise--since he does not understand boundaries). I asked that he not come back and they honored that (though Harold did not seem sympathetic to my concerns). I don't know if the and quot;unlikableand quot; worker is a relative of his? But I hope I never see that person again and I would never allow him in my home. When Alan returned, he brought his own ladder and was more careful about drips, drop cloths, etc. But, then again, it was only Alan at this point. It was probably the unlikable one making the mess too. The major focus of this phase was to get smooth walls and ceilings. I believe I was pretty clear about this with Harold. After all, another phase was to remove popcorn from the ceilings and I know I mentioned that I did not like textured surfaces. So, I was shocked when Harold did not know I wanted my kitchen ceiling smooth. Textured ceilings may be popular in Florida but not where I live and not in my circle.
Alan finished the job alone, to my specifications, over a few days. He does beautiful work and if I could hire just him, I would be happy to do so.
