Jesus Hernandez handled our monthly lawn service. In addition, we hired him to do landscape design and installation on a project that cost around 12,000. We were happy with the work that was done and, a few months later, recommended Jesus Hernandez to some new neighbors who were landscaping their entire property -- a job that was likely work more than $30,000.
The first sign of trouble came when Jesus failed to show up to begin work on our neighbors' lot on the date that was promised. After Jesus failed to show for several days in a row, despite promises that his crew would be there "tomorrow," it was clear that our neighbors were at the breaking point. We felt responsible because we had made the recommendation, and we gave Jesus the benefit of the doubt. As a result, we called Jesus and gave him the heads up that if he didn't get a crew out to the neighbors' property, he would lose the job. Jesus thanked us for the warning, and shortly dispatched his crew to the neighbors' lot.
A few months later, we desired to install a large bed in our front yard for a rose garden, along with some garden paths. We contacted Jesus, who made two appointments to bid the job. He failed to show up for either appointment and failed to apologize for leaving us waiting. After the second failure to show, I sent Jesus an email to complain. What follows is an exact transcript of a portion of our conversation:
ME: It has now been three weeks since Alex indicated he informed you that we were interested in having some additional paths and garden spaces installed. Today is the second time you have failed to show up after making arrangements to meet us to discuss a landscaping request. This shows a complete lack of respect for our time. If you cannot find the time to show up for the appointments you set, and if we cannot get the work we need done sometime in the coming week, we will find another landscaping company to do the work.
JESUS: I can go Monday in the PM. 2:00/3:00 Let me know if that Works. Also if you need anything extra done call the office482-7350 I don't see my guys everyday .Alex told me 2 weeks after the fact.I'm more than happy to do anything u need done.Thank you Jesus Hernandez.
ME: Wrong answer. An apology for wasting our time (twice) would have been appropriate. We've gone out of our way to recommend you for other jobs. We understand you are busy, but it becomes a problem when you get too busy to keep appointments.I think it's best that we discontinue your services for everything. Please let Alex know this is no reflection on him.
JESUS: No Problem
ME: Still no apology. Interesting.Unfortunately, word of mouth operates in two ways. We will be certain to let others know.
JESUS: No apology .I didn't do nothing wrong. So you do what ever you feel .
ME: You (twice) made an appointment to meet clients and then didn't show. The first time, you didn't bother to call at all and the second time you called an hour after the appointment time, after we wasted our time waiting around for you. You need to seriously reevaluate your idea of customer service.
JESUS: Thank you .But I didn't ask you for your Opinion
We later heard from one of his employees that Jesus said, in response to our decision to terminate his services, "I'm not apologizing to her. I've got a million dollar business. I don't need those people."
