We have lived on this property for 10 years, lightning took out the first pump, and we had gone with the previous owners recommendation of using Stuart French. He helped develop this 8 house one street development. He was excellent, the second time the pump went out, we were out of town. Came back and sadly found out, Stuart French had died.
After calling Steve Young, slow to get there, and not explaining anything, said we just needed a whole new pump. There was no lightning, no reason. $1800. Then two years or less, it happened again, no explanation, another new pump.
This weekend we had another, no water incident, we called Steve Young's answering service over three times. NO CALL BACK, after two pumps.
Dick Joyce tech, called back immediately, and showed up on a Sunday night in the rain. He needed the wench to retrieve a wire that was shorting out from, Steve Young's faulty workmanship (sloppy wiring, and they use PVC vs. metal tubes)
The service guy from Dick Joyce was quick to say these things can happen, but I am here to say I do not recommend Steve Young on Quality, or Service, or Trustworthiness especially after thousands of dollars spent, and the answering service, and service guys all admitted Steve Young is never around on the weekend because he is at the beach. (and our water pump has always decide to shut down on the weekend)
If you live in Lake Mary, Longwood, area, call Dick Joyce
Now the time line. I called them on a Thursday morning when I found I had no water. I started at 0700 as they state that they have 24hr response. The call service took all my details and said if I didn't hear back within 20 min, to call back. I gave them 30. Same thing. an hour later, I called and got a live person. (Had this one failed, I'd have moved on to another vendor.)
A guy named Tim was dispatched to come take a look. He called on his way, and was very punctual and polite. Definitely an old salt at this game. After confirming that the issue was down the well and he would need his crane to pull it out, he advised me that the truck was busy until Friday. Friday he called and said it was still tied up. So, I pushed to Monday. I give Tim a plus for communication.
Monday arrives. Tim calls advises that they are on the way. Again great commo and was right on time. They did a great job (Tim and another member). Knew what they were doing. Quickly got to work, got the pipes pulled up, the old pump, replaced a couple corroded sections of pipe, new wires, and down it went one section at at time. Once they got it hooked up, they confirmed correct operation and ran it though an auxiliary pipe until it ran clear. (disrupted silt and sediment from pulling it out of the hole.) They checked the air level in the pressure tank and made sure the rest of the well system worked properly before they wrapped it up.
Then the bill....
I've called the company and requested to speak with someone of authority to ask for an adjustment.
I'll post an update with their decision.
Update: The response is that they want me to get a quote on letterhead from three other well drilling companies where the price is reflective of what I'm finding and then they may work with me. They will not accept the printed and public pricing from on line supply companies or local construction or plumbing supply companies. Again, do your homework UP FRONT. Find out what pump they use to replace yours, and ORDER IT ahead!!
Would I used them again or recommend them to someone?
Based on their work alone, I'd day yes.
BUT, only if I get a reasonable quote in writing and I'd certainly recommend that anyone else do the same and then negotiate anything that seems way out of the realm of reason.
On Monday morning, I received a call that they were able to come out. Tim pulled the pump, and cut off the well head and replaced with PVC collar and pipe. As the pump was 20 years old, and we had to replace at least some of the downpipe, we decided to replace the pump, downpipe, and the electrical box.
Tim was pleasant and willing to answer all my questions.
He looked at my well and said that the whole system was obsolete. It would cost around $3000 to replace the tank, aerator, pump and water softener. I said that it all works well and we are happy with the clean water in our house, and only the pressure tank needs replacing. He said this would cost $575 and he would be able to put it in next week on Wednesday or Thursday. That would be over a week after I called.
I had found online that my exact same tank costs between $200 and $250, so I found it a bit excessive to charge $325 for labor. I decided to go with another company (Trentham Well Drilling), who came out within hours after calling and replaced the tank for $400.
I would not normally leave a review of a company where I ended up buying nothing, but Dick Joyce wasted my entire day, delayed the replacement of my water tank by several days, were unprofessional on the phone and in person, tried to sell me a whole new unnecessary system for thousands of dollars, and would have overcharged me for installing the new tank.
