She went way over budget and kept calling for more materials. The final cost for material was $700 and her labour was $2700. Total $3400.00 She would call and say unexpected things came up. For example, the wallpaper was difficult to get off, the trim on the doors was painted with latex over oil. The ceilings were soaking up too much paint. The toilets were running and she would fix that for another $100
She:
- did not clean up her work site, left trash bags and empty paint pails
- she used the homeowners new vaccuum as her shop vac and totally ruined the filter
- did not paint the MasterBath 'quietude', rather she applied a mess of white plaster that took a full day of sanding to remove
- did not paint the GuestBath 'raffia cream', again it had a mess of white plaster that was expensive to remove
- both Bathrooms still had the wallpaper left on that she had been contracted to remove
- the Master BR curtain valance was partially spraypainted and the curtains were left in a heap in the closet
- the inexplainable plaster surfaces in the kitchen and baths cost the homeowner an additional $480 to sand and remove
- paint/overspray/knockdown spray/plaster was left on the toilet, grout, tiles, ceiling fixtures, door knobs, shower doors, mirrors
- the main smoke detector was removed and compromised the safety of the neighbouring units
- the 2 back up smoke detectors were never installed as promised
- both bedroom fans and the kitchen light were left in total mess, speckled with dirt, overspray and paint
- the tub was plugged with drywall compound and the tiles were splattered with paint
- the kitchen sink was a mess of paint on the taps, drain, counter area
- furniture had paint can rings
- multiple vents were removed and never replaced
- she offered to repair the running toilets and we paid an extra $100 but they were never repaired
- the bathroom shower curtain was covered in drywall goop
- light bulbs were broken off in the fixture in both bathrooms
- the metal doors were painted one side only and the surface is speckled with plaster and dirt, blobs in paint finish
- she did not replace any toggle switches/receptacle plates as contracted, she sprayed right over them with knockdown
- the furnace vent was spayed with knockdown
- she got paint hand prints on the balcony railing
- even the inside of the medicine chests and kitchen cupboards had paint overspray
- none of the drawers were painted on the inside as promised
We are from out-of-country and relied on her pictures to tell the story. She took very limited pictures (like taking a pic of the elephants toenail and you don't see the whole elephant)
The lesson we learned is that any future jobs, we will have to be on-site to supervise the ongoing process.
