The experience with Tom Coates, owner of Coates Construction, was fabulous. We live 900 miles north of the home we recently purchased in St. Augustine Beach and trusting someone with the keys to our home was a leap of faith. Tom met with us at the house one Saturday in February to develop a plan and then generate a price quote. By mid-March we were able to visit the home just before the new tenants were to move in. The tile floors were beautiful. The kitchen is wonderful - Tom moved cupboards to make the workflow more useable and built a handy island for storage and eating. Tom was responsive to my many emails and phone calls. He provided insightful feedback and suggestions. The work was done on time. This experience has far exceeded our expectations.

In order to add the carport, we needed to get a variance from the City (St. Augustine). Tom did a terrific job representing me, with detailed exhibits and pictures of houses in the neighborhood. I do not believe that the variance would have been granted were it not for his preparation and presentation. Overall, the project went as planned and I am very pleased with the results. My only complaint would be that the workers were a bit sloppy but once I complained, this improved.

I was very pleased with the work done by Tom Coates and his construction crew Tom was very responsive to all questions and concerns, and he always seemed eager to please on any suggestions and ideas that I had. His crew and sub-contractors always showed up on time, and there was never a delay in the progression of the work being done. Tom's personality is easy going and friendly, and it was a real pleasure to work with him. Tom gives a lot to this community and I would highly recommend him as a builder.

Contacted Tom Coates of Coates Construction Inc, a well regarded home builder in the area. A mutual acquaintance knew I was interested in remodeling my kitchen and knew that as a result of new home construction slow downs, Tom would be interested. I spoke with Tom who is a very quiet spoken, gentle person. I explained what I wanted done and he provided me with an estimate that was within my budget. I also told him I had heard enough horror stories about remodeling projects going off the tracks and I did not want this to be another one of those. I did not want him to start until he had all his people lined up ready to go so we were not waiting a week for a sub while no other work could be done. Tom estimated the project would take 2.5 to 3 weeks. We agreed on a start date and Tom showed up on time with 2 workers to start the demolition. As it turned out one of the individuals was Eddie Gadtzke, who was a tireless worker throughout the project and was Tom's eyes and ears on site. The work went along on schedule, each sub showing up at their appointed time, doing the work efficiently and quickly. Tom would come by almost every day to check on the progress and would check in by phone with me on days he did not come by. Eddie would let me know at the end of each day what would be happening the next day. At 8:00 on the dot each morning Eddie was at my front door to begin work. Tom also put me in touch with a cabinet designer, and he in turn referred me to a granite company for my countertops, and hooked me up with the person at Sears’s appliance who handled contractor accounts so I got a discount on my new appliances. Tom also referred me to the flooring company for my new floors. What I felt was important in all these referrals was everyone knew each other and had respect for each other. So no one wanted to be the one to leave the other one holding the ball. The first week with all the dust and noise from the demolition, and doing whatever dishes I had in the bathroom sink, was just pure madness. I asked myself more than once what had I gotten myself into. But, by the end of the week, the new framing and drywall was done, electrical and plumbing had been started and I felt like we would get through it after all. Long story short, the three weeks flew by. Eddie was doing the new baseboards, crown molding and painting by the end of the 3rd week. The only delay and it really wasn't much was the counter tops. We expected them to be installed the 3rd week but were not done until the middle of the 4th week. It was quite an experience and I'm not sure I'd do it again anytime soon, not because of a bad experience, but just because your life is turned upside down for a few weeks. Tom and Eddie were great to work with. I met with Tom several times to go over everything before construction started. He was always responsive and interested in any concerns I had throughout the project. Eddie was excellent. I knew I could go to work and leave him at the house and the work would be done. He has a great personality and is really an interesting guy. The final construction costs came in a little higher than estimated, but that was due to additional work I decided to have done. I would highly recommend Tom Coates and Coates Construction Inc for any home remodel project. True skilled professionals who take great pride in their work.
