DOUBLE J REPAIR SHOP

Brought these folks a 15 year-old 38" riding lawnmower for a complete inspection.  They found a bunch of things wrong: it needed an oil change, it needed an air filter, it needed a spark plug, it needed new blades, and they said it needed TWO new spindles (each with a shaft and bearings; a spindle is the part directly above the blades).  They gave me an estimate of $450, which is WAY more than the mower is worth!  Funny thing is that one new spindle was put on just a few months ago, so it really only needed one.  I had them do no work, and took the mower home.  Then I went to amazon.com & my local big box store, spent $75 on parts, and spent a couple hours labor fixing the problems they found. Of course I only put in one new spindle. I'm not sure what their markup on parts is, but I know it must be very high.  Even if I would have needed TWO spindle units (I didn't), the total wholesale parts cost would have been only $105.  This business is located in a very expensive part of Jacksonville, so maybe that's why they feel comfortable charging such high prices.
