"This office provided [Member Name Removed] with a full set of owner approved construction drawings, at an agreed fixed fee, that were in fact issued a building permit shortly after their submittal to the city. [Member Name Removed], a first time home owner, a novice to the construction field and against my professional opinion, pulled a "home owner build" permit instead of taking the more traditional route of hiring a licensed general contractor. This attempt at saving money cost [Member Name Removed] lengthy delays due to her inexperience, including failed inspections, not following the city approved set of drawings and hiring of non-qualified people. In addition, [Member Name Removed] made a number of client driven changes to the scope of work, all of which required an additional field visit for documentation of the deviations and required for knowing how to revise the drawings. I stuck by her side through the process but did charge her for the additional work I provided. Had [Member Name Removed] followed my owner and city approved set of construction drawings, there would have been no need for revised drawings and additional fees. [Member Name Removed], recently told me that she just finished the work, two years after I completed the drawings!!! This job should have been completed in six months! My advise was and always will be, that unless you have knowledge of the construction process, it will most always cost yourself more money and more time than had you hired a licensed general contractor in the first place!
