"I am sorry you feel that way. I heard Larry talk to you and he did not have an attitude. Our guy was going to come out to your home this afternoon and I was calling you this morning to let you know! He was finishing his job around lunch time! If your going to make a review please be honest! You were extremely satisfied before! You just called and emailed our office last week and our guys are extremely busy...We are 2 weeks out on all jobs. I am sorry we couldn't drop what we were doing to run out to your home. We don't pull our crews off jobs in the middle of them. That would not be fair to the other homeowner/builder that they are on. Instead of calling us this morning and checking in, you chose to write a review. Your job was done back in February and it is now June. In Florida I do not know anyone that does not use sprinklers for 4 months! Again I spoke with you several times and you were always happy! Very sorry you had such a change of heart!"
This is an outstanding company and I have to thank Angie's List for me finding them. I live in the area of The Villages, FL and Couch Pavers is a large company based in Lutz but who cover from Gainesville to Sarasota. My wife and I wished to have pavers installed in our brand new 16' x 30' screen enclosure. The son of the owner came to the house originally and was so helpful and knowledgeable in guiding us to choose the right product and color scheme. He told us there is no up front down payment and they don't collect the first dollar until the job is completed and BOTH spouses are completely satisfied. Let me tell you, that is exactly what happened. They arrived as agreed and although we had lost a fight with the guys who installed our screen enclosure because they refused to let us lay the pavers first, the crew placed the pavers after the fact, which involved much additional cutting and fitting. Not once did they complain about this change in plans and there was no additional charge for the job! To top it off, the owner of this large company was there for a good part of the day! This wasn't exactly a huge job for their company but he oversaw everything and even took time to constantly clean our screens of paver dust HIMSELF during the day. We had an issue with our door from the lanai out to the enclosure not having necessary clearance to install pavers. He made a couple of phone calls and found a screen guy he works with who came over within a little over an hour and 3 guys fixed the issue by raising up the door frame in no time for a small additional charge so Couch still finished the entire job in one day as promised.
The big dog (owner) had one final request. That I run home from work to inspect the finished product so he knew BOTH spouses were satisfied. I told him we would likely be adding driveway pavers next year and looked forward to seeing him again. I'm a busy guy as senior pastor of a 1000+ member congregation and writing 500 word essays for Angie's List is not something I'm wont to do, but these guys went over and above in every way and I highly recommend them!"Thank you very much and we are so happy to hear how happy you are! We strive to make sure all of our customers are satisified before payment is made. We appreciate the kind words."
Couch Pavers responded immediately to our request for a quote. Larry Couch was on time and was able to give us a quote of 11,000 for our apprx. 2300 square foot driveway and walkway area that needed to be removed and then replaced with bricks. This was the best quote we had received for pavers and with the great reviews I saw on Angie's List, I thought we couldn't lose with this company. Larry assured us that they always and quot;do it the right wayand quot; so I contacted Jennifer to schedule a start date. We were expecting company for Easter weekend, so I thought I'd see if they could get our driveway done. Our eyesore of a cracked concrete driveway would be gone and we could welcome family with our new brick pavers. Jennifer was awesome and found bricks for our project and scheduled us for a week before we had family coming in. I was so excited to finally have my nice driveway. Unfortunately, this is where the excitement ended.
Day one was our concrete tear-out. They were supposed to start at 8:00 but no one came to the house until sometime between 9:30 and 10:00. I thought it would be a team with jackhammers, but it was one man with a Bobcat. I left him to his work and didn't take a look at the work until after he had left that day. Larry Couch did stop by at some point that day and knocked on the door to let me know the bricks would be delivered that night. After the Bobcat man left for the day, I went outside to check out the work. Sure enough our concrete was gone...so was our grass. The Bobcat had left deep ruts in our yard. It looked like a huge cat (no pun intended) had clawed our front hill. I was so excited to get my bricks the next day that I decided I wouldn't be upset about that and surely they would protect the rest of our yard during the remainder of the project.
Day two was brick installation day. Three or four guys showed up at 8:00 today. About an hour into work, one of them came to the door. It was hard to understand him due to his thick accent. He asked me if we had water in our house. Of course, we did. He led me out to the torn up driveway and showed me a long pipe exposed after the concrete was removed. He asked me again if we had water inside the house. I told him we did and that the pipe he was showing me was for the sprinkler system. He had no other questions and went on with his work. I didn't think anything of it except that he wanted to know maybe what kind of pipe he was covering up. Larry came by later in the morning to check in. He let me know he was having a dumpster delivered so the guys could clean up and that I would need to write a check or pay cash ($220) for it because it wasn't a company they normally worked with. The woman dropped off the dumpster late in the afternoon and I paid her. Larry subtracted that amount from the total we owed so, no big deal. The brick layers worked until 4:30 or so and weren't finished. They didn't say anything when they left, so I didn't know if they'd come back on a Saturday or if we had to wait until Monday.
Day three was a Saturday. Three(?) guys did come back on Saturday morning to finish laying bricks and to spread the sand in the joints. Larry stopped by early in the morning to check up on work and told me the workers would clean up when they were done, the dumpster would be picked up Monday and the palette and a half of extra bricks would be picked up Monday as well. They worked until approximately 1:30 or so and left again without saying anything to us. When we went outside to inspect the driveway, the bricks were all laid but the entire driveway and grass surrounding our driveway was covered in sand. The bricks looked nice under the sand, but if this was the final product, it did not look and quot;cleaned upand quot; or presentable at all. The dumpster was placed in our side yard, leaving canyon-like ruts where the large truck had driven up into our yard (this is in addition to the ruts left on our front hill by the Bobcat the first day). The workers had thrown sand (like sand box sand) into the ruts left by the Bobcat the first day. Besides the fact that sandbox sand doesn't help grass grow, the piles they had thrown down were so thick, there's no way grass would ever peek through. Not a solution to ruining sod. I was hoping they were planning on coming back Monday to sweep and spray or blow the driveway and even out the ruts in our yard.
With company coming in five days, we were eager to get the driveway and yard looking presentable so my husband and I spent five hours on Sunday sweeping the sand into joints and down the driveway into the street. We weren't able to get all of it, but it looked better. Then, we focused on our ruined grass. We went to turn our sprinkler system on and nothing came out! My husband checked the main water valve to discover it had been turned to the and quot;OFFand quot; position. When he turned it on, water came gushing from pipes beneath a bush on the side of our driveway! We turned the water off again and once the puddle had receded, found pieces of broken pipe beneath the bush. They had broken our sprinkler system and hadn't told us! Now it all made sense why the first day the guys came to lay brick he was asking me if we had water in the house. His fix for it was to turn the water valve to the and quot;OFFand quot; position. As long as we didn't notice, I guess it was OK to keep going without fixing it or telling us that it was broken. My husband called Larry and left a message about it on Sunday after we discovered the problem. He never received a call back and, when Larry called Monday to come out for payment, I told him again about the sprinkler system and he acted like he didn't get my husband's message on Sunday. To my shock, Larry revealed that the Bobcat on the very first day had actually broken the pipes and that he had known about it that first day! I guess it never crossed his mind to mention it to the homeowner. His excuse for not telling us was that he thought the brick layers were going to fix it (no...they just turned off the water valve). It is deplorable that no one told us and that Larry didn't have us check the system with him present to see if it had indeed been fixed properly.
Well, before we would pay him the 11,000 on Monday, he had to call a local sprinkler system repair man come out to do an emergency fix. Turns out the Bobcat had actually broken it in two places and there was no way some brick layer was going to be able to patch it together. Boy am I glad we wanted to water our ruined sod on Sunday because, if we hadn't, I would've paid Larry Couch 11,000.00 and wouldn't have discovered the issue until later. By the way, Larry did comment on what a mess the place was when he came out for payment Monday. I told him he should've seen it before we worked for five hours Sunday. He did some spraying of the bricks at the top of the drive while he waited for the sprinkler repair guy to come out. The palette and a half of extra bricks that were supposed to be picked up Monday were finally removed Wednesday and, as expected, the grass underneath was dead.
When I contacted Jennifer after payment to let her know how disappointed we were with how the project went, she just kept stating that they paid for the sprinklers. I knew this, but wanted her to understand for future customers that homeowners would like to know when something is broken and that we would like workers to take care of our yard (or at least warn us ahead of time that it will be ruined). She also brought up, in retaliation, that we had used the dumpster sitting in our side yard to remove some household garbage. Yes, we did. We have never had construction done and didn't know not to.
To sum up this project, I would say we traded one eye-sore for another. Our once cracked, uneven driveway was now a nicely patterned brick paved drive, but our yard looked like an army of construction vehicles att
was complete but must have missed it. They were wonderful. knew what they were doing
and I have NO issues with their work. not even a blade of grass. I am
patio. Larry was professional and very informative. He brought many samples of different
pavers. We were pressed for time because we were expecting visitors by the end
of the week. Larry's install crew arrived on time and worked nonstop the entire
day. We are extremely pleased with the workmanship and the new patio is
beautiful!!!!
The next day they delivered the pavers and other materials. A crew of three showed up to install the pavers. Once the base was put down and all measurements were made the job started. Took about 2 full days to cut and install all the blocks. They did a perfect job. It was neat, level, and cleaned up everything. They also put footers on the last row of the pavers so there is no movement when cars drive on it. We felt this was important, as other contractors did not include this feature. A year later and no movement, cracks or color changes.
Do get it sealed within a few weeks or do it yourself as it is expensive to have someone do it for you.
Don't buy cheap sealer if you do it yourself it could discolor or ruin the pavers.
