This review is my opinion, you can form your own opinion.
I paid 50% of a 5000 estimate up front. Lots of shortcuts and scope changes to the work, which was not specified in writing despite my requests to add detail to the quote.
The front yard was done with one coarse of border bricks instead of the two that were specified in our verbal discussions (like the back yard). When they were cleaning up to leave I asked if we were going to finish the front yard. I was told that was it. So I looked closely at the rest of the work, then went to the bank and cancelled payment for the last payment of $2400. They are still ahead, I figure they put about 1500 into the job (for a $5000 job).
Only two of seven garden islands were done with landscaping fabric as specified and billed (they did take a few dollars off the final bill for fabric not used, no adjustment for labor). It is not yet two weeks and there are weeds emerging.
The retaining wall started falling over the second day. Despite our talks about their professional capabilities, they did not stagger the joints in the block work and used only enough mortar to ruin the materials so they can't be reused. Rocks are spilling out of the gaps and over the one-block borders in front. Workmanship is unsatisfactory. In fact, in the front, it is apparent that no more effort was given than dropping the blocks on the ground and kicking them in place. Nothing is level.
I have an estimate from another landscaper that says the entire job needs to be done over and most of the material is trash.
These guys won't put anything in writing and refused to finish the front yard. Then I looked closely at the work quality and made a video. The final bill included thousands for material and work not performed and although they said by email they would show me the receipts for materials, they have not. I shopped some and concluded they pumped up charges by 200- 300 percent. I stopped payment on the last check and I guess they may try to sue me (bring it). But I doubt they will sue because they don't actually have a contract or work order and I didn't sign anything promising payment. All we had was a quote sheet that was deliberately confusing, then an invoice. I am told it will cost me thousands to get back to my starting point and most of the material is ruined. Don't fall into the spider web of their web site and pictures they will show.
Despite all that, I tried to work with them to resolve. They refuse to put anything in writing and I did not want to do a 2-on-1 verbal session as I know they will try to convince me to pay the rest so they can finish. That would be throwing good money after bad. I made a video, coming to Utube soon. I also have my very reasonable emails to them and their unresponsive and inconsistent replies, ending with their company policy to not do anything without knowing what the issues are (they had my detailed email but would not respond). Don't waste my time, I'm too busy figuring out how to fix the mess and screening lawyers.
"Unfortunately, Angie’s List can be used by unscrupulous customers to obtain more than what was bargained for, as well as to assist customers who have legitimate problems with their contractor. It was probably a mistake to tell the member how much we valued our Angie’s List rating while we were negotiating our contract. He is “an experienced project manager in industry,” and knew he could use our respect for Angie’s List against us to obtain more than he had bargained for. As for his complaints, we will promptly correct any and all incomplete or defective work and provide the written proposal he requires before starting, if he will allow our construction manager to inspect the site, something he has refused to do so far. However, some of his claims and demands are incorrect or are not reasonable: A. We will not reduce the contract price. Our prices are fair and below or within those charged by our competitors. The retail price of the materials we supplied would be almost $3,000.00. Further, we are over budget on his job, primarily because of the no charge additional work he requested and we performed while on his job. B. Only one course of blocks was specified in his front yard, at his request. The few blocks left over are far fewer than would be required to provide two courses. These blocks were left over because our supplier only sells them in complete pallets. C. The blocks are not designed to be staggered. Photographs from the manufacturer’s landscape catalog can verify this. D. Weed fabric was installed in the “garden islands” he had requested before the contract. He specifically did not request it for the other “islands” and it was not priced into the contract. E. The member inspected the completed job with us twice before he gave us the final check and expressed satisfaction and appreciation; a check upon which he stopped payment without contacting us."
