Of course, my A/C broke on a Saturday on one of the hottest weekends of the year - isn't that how it always goes? After calling around to a few service providers I contact Florida Home Air Conditioning, who said they could come out that day. The phone reps at this company are extremely personable. They gave me a window of time and told me the repair man would call 30 minutes before coming out. Right on time, he called and let me know he was on his way. The gentleman that came out was very nice and appeared to be knowledgeable. He replaced my contactor and capacitor, but informed me that I really need a new system since my system is already 14 years old and is going to just continue to get worse and need constant repairs. I understand some guys are required by their companies to try to upsell, and Florida Home A/C is affiliated with Home Depot so I can imagine that this could be a part of thier culture, so I brushed this off.
Two hours after the repair man left, my air conditioner stopped working again. I tried contacting the company through their web chat and was told they needed to patch me through to the phone, but each time they did, the phone hung up on me. Finally, he said he would just have them call me back. They never did. The next day I called them and was told they were booked solid but they would just try to work me in some time between 9am and 9pm. I just needed to wait here for a call and they would be out a half hour later. The repair guy came out around 5pm and told me that this time I needed a new motor. On top of the $560 I paid yesterday, I would need to pay another $680 for a new motor. However, a better option, he told me, was to get a new system. He would credit the money I'd already paid as a discount off a new system and install a new 3 ton, 14 seer, Rheem system for $4800. Of course, they could replace the system that day, but if I wanted the motor fixed I would need to wait until Tuesday. Again, this man was very nice and polite, but I couldn't help but think I was being had.
So, basically, I paid $560 to spend my weekend in a house that was 93 degrees because all this company really wanted to do was sell me a new system. On Monday I contacted a different repair company and was told that the capacitor/contactor issue was most likely misdiagnosed, and the issue was faulty bearings in the motor. It was repaired in 20 minutes for less than $400, and my A/C system was given a clean bill of health. It's a shame that this is the company that Home Depot uses, and apparently they're on some TV show as well. I hate to think of how many people might be buying new systems unnecessarily due to the upsell tactics of the company, or having other issues similar to mine.
