Santana had washed my outside windows before and did a decent job. So when he contacted me again, I was glad to re-hire him. Although he and his wife were late arriving the first day, they did wash all the windows inside and outside the house, and I paid them for that. Then he suggested that he could do some pressure washing tasks for us that really did need to be done, and that they would come back the next day. They were very late the next day, so only worked for an hour or so. They completed pressure washing the outside of the house (not all that well), and Santana insisted that he be paid for that work. He offered that instead of us needing to write two more checks, we go ahead and write a check for the entire remaining balance, and he would finish the work the next day.
Of course, we should never have done that. They never returned, though we called several times and even spoke to him. He claimed car trouble, then said he needed to find a part to fix his pressure washer, etc. etc. Eventually we found out that he and his wife were evidently living in a motel. So I called and told him that we were sympathetic if he was having financial difficulties and would do everything we could to help him find housing and more work, even that my husband would be glad to come and give him a ride to our home to finish the work. Instead he vanished and refused our phone calls.
When we looked into it, we found that Santana has been arrested several times (driving without a license, failing to appear in court, etc.). Obviously he is a desperate man, and it has turned him into a rip-off artist. I felt bad for them, but recommend no one hire them again.
