Stonehouse Kitchens & Bath was able to come through with flying colors! The cabinets are solid wood, made in America, have soft close drawers and are beautiful. The tile has the "wood" look and certainly looks like wood flooring! The slide in drawers have metal rails (not plastic), the upper cabinets are 15" depth and 42" height so I have more space and am able to put large platters in the cabinets without a problem. The island has cabinets on both sides and is convenient to organize and beautiful to look at. There was a slight delay from the original completion date but that is my fault because I made some changes as the work progressed, however, no one ever made me feel that the schedule was more important than my happiness and I am thrilled with the results!
About 2 weeks after the install, we noticed 2 small nicks on the edge of the island. Luis came out and repaired them, matching the quartz almost perfectly. The areas can't be seen unless you know where they are.
Everything that could have gone wrong after that did. Yes, they did fix everything that they should have and in a timely manner. My advice is to pay attention to details up front and there won't be so many issues.
With that said, now that it is all finished, we really do love our new kitchen.
But I DO like the way the bathroom has turned out. After all the time, and my investment both monetarily and emotionally, I guess it was worth it. My major complaints are that I felt that my investment was a bit high for what they did, but mainly that I was told three or four days (if I'd only had a tape recorder!) and many, many months later it was finally finished.
We signed a contract on May 9th with work to start the following week. At our request the contract was delayed until
we returned from vacation on June 24. The floor guys arrived on the June 26 and immediately started removing the old
tile. Approximately 2 hrs later the countertop arrived and the floor guys left for the day. Everything was looking great until
the sink piece was fitted. They had cut it and the pass thru 1/2 - 3/4 inch too narrow. After a pause to contact headquarters
they continued with the install. A little later, the co-owner Luis Mercado and designer Logan Williams arrived to survey
the problem. They came up with the idea of using dur-rock to bridge the gap and hiding the extra width with pencil trim.
The countertop crew completed the install of the tops, cutouts, etc in the early evening and left. The next day the floor guys
came back and took out the rest of the floor. After they left for lunch, I started vacuuming up some of the dust when I
heard a noise in the hose. I had vacuumed up a chunk of the island granite. On further inspection the granite
had cracked on both sides of the cutout . I immediately called Stonehouse and they came over
to assess the problem with the idea of using a remnant to fabricate a new piece. I called Omicron Granite to see if
they had any slabs left from that batch. Fortunately they had 1 left which I put a hold on. The next day I went to Stonehouse and
spoke to Mike Price (the other co-owner) to tell him that not only did I want the island replaced but I wanted the sink piece replaced as well. I also informed him that I had reserved a new slab for them. To their credit they bought the new slab and installed the new pieces 8 days later. Unfortunately the island piece was not as dramatic as the original and there is no continuity in pattern of the counter and sink piece. Contrary to Angies List info on Stonehouse, their tile work was subcontracted to Completely Floored and paint to Bright Side Painting. The floor installation came out well. The tile crew tried their best on the backsplash however they had never worked with Blue Ocean glass tile before so they got off to a rough start applying it as a normal mosaic with the paper bonding to the thinset instead of having the paper side out. This resulted in them having to take it down and start all over again. Instead of applying a solid layer of mastic they used a notched trowel to spread the thinset resulting in a wavy pattern behind the glass. When designing/ordering the tiles, the height of the receptacles/lt switches was not taken into account resulting in the covers covering 1 inch of the glass border. As for the paint job, I wanted a textured cross hatch pattern. Bright Side Painting had never done this before. They were very easy to work with however they couldn't match the pattern I wanted so I settled for an easier pattern. The project was completed on 19 July. Communication between StoneHouse, its
sub contractors, and myself was lacking. Everything appeared to be done at the last minute from ordering materials to
scheduling. I do not know whether moving and splitting up their operation into separate cabinet/design and granite fabrication facilities had any bearing on the quality and timeliness of our project. I do know that I would never recommend them to
anyone. There are a lot of other companies to choose from.
shower pan renovation, and a few vague areas on the estimate. He appeared to be a very good designer who did not really understand the actual construction details as they pertained to this job.
"We apologize for the non response on the quote. Our company was in the middle of a move and it was pretty caotic. We would have loved to do the project which we are capable of handling. We apologize again for the quote and communication."
They gave me a time frame of 3 weeks to finish the project and met it!
First the demo team arrived to move furniture and appliances and tear down the walls and floors. Very professional and polite. I only wish they had prepared the room a little more to avoid the dust that went everywhere. I think if they had brought their own plastic tarps and sheets, it would have been a little more clean. Instead I had to use my sheets to put a barrier between the work areas and the living areas. My hardwoood floors were not protected, so the fridge dragged across it left small scratches that may require some touchups later. They cleaned up after themselves and installed my old cabinets in my garage. So, they redeemed themselves. The prep comments are more of a constructive criticism that they can use towards future projects.
The flooring install had some drama - They took 4-5 days to finish flooring including coming in on a Sunday which I did not expect, but was very appreciative of. This company took great pride in their work and suggested laying tile in a way different from what I had imagined, and I am very happy I took their advice. I installed a wood-look tile in my kitchen and family room. The tile is textured to look and feel like a wood plank. While it looks great, it is a pain to keep clean. The Stonehouse designer warned me about it but I did not listen...I was in love with the sample. I have a dog and a boy who has lots of friends....I spend a lot more time cleaning the floors than I had anticipated. Also...once the tile was installed, it was nearly impossible to wash the grout off. It took them 3 days of washing and literally scrubbing every single tile with a srubber to get most of the grout out. I'm still srubbing the occasional spots that I find. I wish I had known it earlier...I might have gone with a smooth look tile.
The cabinets, granite and backsplash were installed in a timely manner. I did not mess with plumbing, so it was just updating the sink. We had to make an adjustment to the counter extension and I lost a trash cabinet but the layout was more important than the trash cabinet so I made a compromise and the team was right on board.
Sam and his team have been back to make minor adjustments. The final cleanup was good and I now have a kitchen I love.
Stonehouse was a good partner in this project. They made sure that I was well informed and reassured about the project in each phase. As expected in any home improvement project, there were some compromises to be made and I came out of it feeling like I was heard and got my money's worth. I am a happy customer.
