Swimming Pool Remodeling
I WOULD NOT RECOMMEND Five Star Pools. Would give them zero stars if I could. My pool Reno was completed during 2021. One single elderly man installed our pavers. They were uneven, and turned black with mold almost immediately. Sealant was included in our quote. We brought this to Romans attention and he made excuses stating the discoloration could be from our dogs going to the bathroom, etc. This is not the case. I have reviewed the negative reviews and Roman always has an excuse and likes to blame it on the homeowners. If you look at my pavers in the pics there are moldy ones next to pavers with no mold at all. Why would we pressure wash some pavers and not others. I am going to have to pay another company to renovate our deck and spend thousands of dollars. I used Five Stars because of the reviews. I rarely post reviews and its taken me a year to decide to write a negative review because it is not what I wanted I wanted a remedy offered by Roman. One last thing, I have lived in FL almost my entire life. I understand rainy summers in Florida and mold on decks. I understand the need to pressure wash on a regular basis. This is not due to lack of maintenance. PLEASE SEE OTHER REVIEW PERTAINING TO SAME ISSUE OF POORLY LAID PAVERS. POOR CUSTOMER SERVICE.
Response from Five Star Pool
"Hi Gina, thank you for review. The whole job was completed in the estimated time window and was paid in full. According to our records, your pool renovation and pavers installation was completed on 4/9/2021 which is 11/2 years ago (photos of the work in our photo gallery 1,2,3,4). Paver deck and pool resurfacing were handed over to you in Five Star Pool quality. The uneven pavers you bringing up here were re-leveled prior final payment. Spots on your pavers you speaking about are not a mystery - you have several trees around the pool deck area, which drop a lot of debris on the pool deck below and cost staining of pavers (photos of the work in our photo gallery 5,6) - this was already discussed with you when you bring your concerns to our attention during your pool renovation - and this is not pavers issue. Mold on top of the pavers you experiencing today is normal for outdoor spaces in Florida, especially in raining season and it is customer responsibility to clean the pool deck as need it. If you would need help with your deck cleaning, we will be glad to provide a free estimate for you. Have a good day. Team Five Star Pool."

Review: Disappointed for multiple reasons!! I hired Five Star Pool for a patio paver job at my house in East Lake Woodlands, Oldsmar, FL. I am disappointed with how they handled my project for several reasons detailed below. 1) My patio paver project with Five Star Pool was originally scheduled to start the week of January 24th. A week before the start date, I received notice from Five Star Pool that the pavers were not going to be available on time and the project will be pushed back until a month later. I acknowledged the schedule change but then the pavers did arrive on time, the week of January 24th, per the originally scheduled start date. I was surprised on January 25th as I received a phone call that the pavers were being delivered to my house within 30 minutes. I had nowhere to store three pallets of pavers so I had the delivery driver put them in the only parking spot available in the garage. Now I had three pallets of pavers in my garage for a project that was pushed back a month by Five Star Pool because the pavers were not going to be available. I called Five Star Pool and let them know the pavers arrived on time and that they were in my garage and asked if they could keep the original schedule and start the current week. The representative indicated it was probably not possible but that she would check. I did not hear anything else from her and had no apology or acknowledgment for a mix-up that prevented me from using my garage for a month. 2) At the time the bulk of the project was complete, the Five Star Pool paver installer mentioned that he would be back on the next workday to finish and clean up. On that next workday, when he was finished, I went out and looked and it seemed fine but it was wet at that time so hard to tell how it would look until it dried out. The next day I went out after everything was dried out and noticed that he did not clean up as he said he would and there was dust from cutting pavers on the walls of the house, the new paver deck, and also the patio wall that surrounds the pavers. Five Star Pool removed the larger project debris but I had to perform the detailed cleanup including wiping down the walls of the house to remove paver dust that was specified as included in the contract. 3) Five Star Pool over-ordered pavers by around 30%. After the project was complete, they asked if I wanted to keep some extras for replacing any future damaged/cracked pavers and I did keep way more than I will need. They mentioned they would have someone come by and pick up the remaining extras. Well, the guy who came by tried to talk me into keeping additional extra pavers and I mentioned I already had enough and did not want or need anymore. Later, after he removed the debris and extra pavers, I noticed he took new pavers and hid them in an enclave on the far side of the garage. He took pavers he was supposed to remove and shoved them in a small inlet area of the house behind a bush for some reason. After I noticed, I took pictures and sent an email to Five Star Pools and received no response but miraculously the next day the pavers were removed. 4) I originally requested the pavers be sealed as part of the project. After installation, I asked Five Star Pool about sealing the pavers. They did not have any record of me requesting the pavers be sealed so I re-sent an email with the request which was made several months earlier. They stated they will work up an estimate for sealing and that sealing should be done about 28 days after installation. 6 weeks later and I have not received the estimate. 5) Patio has low and elevated areas (wavy) not including the expected slope for drainage.
Response from Five Star Pool
"Hi Joe, we appreciate choosing Five Star Pool and thank you for your review regarding your recent project. Regarding your paragraph #1) Five Star Pool was advised by 3rd party - paver company on 1/5/22 that the delivery will be postponed due to shortages of the materials and the new date for delivery would be the 1st week of February. Due to that update we had to move your project on our schedule when the material is on the job site. We put it right away for the 2nd week of February. We emailed you that same day 1/5/22 when we found out from the paver company about this change. As we state in our contract and additional documents you sign with our company before we start the job we are not responsible for the 3rd party delays. We are scheduled few months out for incoming jobs so in this situation we have to adjust our schedule with new jobs to fill up the open spot for the week and try to fit you in our schedule as soon as possible when the material arrives which we did. Regarding the paragraph #2) We would like to reference a section from our contract and additional documents you sign with our company before we start the job. Our what to expect list - #15. Construction debris is collected during the project on client's driveway & hauled away at the end of the project.?*For a detailed cleaning, estimate can be provided upon request. Regarding the paragraph #3) Our company was advised by you on the email from 2/23/22 about paver clean up and our supervisor emailed back the same day at 7:58 PM that the pavers will be collected right the next day which they were. Regarding the paragraph #4) We do apologize for any inconvenience in this matter, If you still would like to receive the estimate for sealer let us know so our office can provide that. Team Five Star Pool"

This is the second time I have used Five Star Pool for major projects. Two yeas ago to install paver in the pool deck. They were great to work with. On time and on budget. The next project was to resurface the pool and spa with pebble tech finish. The pool and spa look amazing. There project manager Carlos is great. He would visit regularly and helped us on issues that were not related specifically to the pool and spa. They are tops in our book. Steve

We signed a contract with Five Star Pools on 9/13/2020. They were slated to begin on 1/11/2021. They estimated the project would require 6-8 weeks to complete. I am currently writing this on 6/15/2021 and the project is still not complete. Furthermore, they recently installed the limestone pavers and almost immediately (the first rain within two weeks) they turned a rusty color. I have attached photos. After sharing the photos with Five Star Pools they were perplexed at what could have caused this and reached out their supplier who basically stated that the stones were in good condition when they were delivered. They then told me to contact the supplier if we had any questions. Since we were not happy with accepting them in this condition answer, we had various contractors come out to the house to examine them. They all believed that the rusty color discoloration that occurred because of two reasons: A. They believed that landscaping sand was used vs. cement sand. Apparently since limestone is so porous, landscaping sand is not as clean and can have coloring and iron from rebar in it and should be avoided when using white limestone. I sent the owner of Five Star Pools an email on 6/6/2020 asking what kind of sand was used to further validate it this was correct and they did not respond. I am attaching a photo of the sand in water that one of our experts put in and it turns the same rusty color that matches the color of the discoloration on the stone. B. The second cause is the way they installed the pavers with partial thin set and partial sand is causing a moisture trap and forcing the moisture to come throughout the perimeter of each tile. We asked that a representative of Five Star Pools be present when the contractors that we hired were here in order for them to hear the cause of the issue but they did send someone out. The person they heard speak was Wayne Wilson, owner of Riverside Home service Paver Sealing And Restoration, who later emailed and stated the following: A. After reviewing your deck yesterday morning it is in my opinion that your stairs that are showing the heavy moisture staining will need to be picked up and mortared down with a suitable exterior grade white LFT Setting material. It looks as though the sand bed under your tread is holding water due to insufficient drainage. As you can see in the pictures on the estimate it is pinched between what looks to be concrete and it will basically create a pond under the stone. Filling this void with suitable material will not allow any water from settling thus eliminating the moisture trap. Let me reiterate, we as the clients had three companies come out and they all three had similar opinions that the cause was the sand or the fact they did not use a suitable exterior grade white LFT Setting material under the entire stone and therefore caused moisture traps. Five Star Pool offered no help in finding a resolution. I then sent a note to Five Star Pools on 6/11 asking them to install the pavers properly and they responded on 6/14 refusing to fix the issue they caused by installing the stone incorrectly. We spent $21,442 on these pavers and in less than two weeks upon the first rain they were ruined. Some companies have said they can be cleaned and placed back down, other companies seem to think they cannot be cleaned. All of the companies seem to think this issue will not resolve itself until the two issues are addressed properly.
Response from Five Star Pool
"Hello, There is no issue with limestone pavers. It is natural for limestone rock to show beige / brown spots when exposed to outdoor elements after installation. This is temporary and will cure itself as soon as moister makes its way thru limestone pavers. Mrs. Aydelotte submitted complain with BBB, Complaint ID#: 67492574 and Hillsborough county customer protection, case #CP21000389 and both complaints were closed in favor of Five Star Pool since no wrong materials or wrong installation processes were found. Swimming pool is completed including final inspection, permit #NPO35838 and swimming pool and deck is looking beautiful. Thank you."

Great job done by a great team! Our 31 year old pool had never been refinished, and had major issues. We had both our pool and deck refinished. Five Star Pool did an awesome job on both! Roman, Andrew , and Lenka were a pleasure to work with! I highly recommend you use Five Star to do your pool project!

Bought a home with a 30 yr old pool which needed extensive repairs (leaks) plus resurfacing. 5-Star Pool company explained from the beginning that there may be issues (hollow spots) discovered during the work. They kept us informed and showed us anything that needed additional attention and our options of repair. All of the staff & crew were responsive and respectful. A very positive experience for a major project!

MY POOL HAD TO BE RESURFACED TWICE DUE TO SHODDY WORK ON THEIR PART AND I HAVE THE PICTURES TO PROVE IT AND NOW THAT THEY HAVE REFINISHED THE POOL FOR THE SECOND TIME I HAVE HAD CONSTANT ISSUES WITH THE POOL LOSING WATER. THE POOL IS LEAKING DUE TO A WELL POINT THAT THIS COMPANY SAID THAT I NEEDED AND I HAVE SINCE BEEN INFORMED BY LICENSED PROFESSIONALS THAT THE WELL POINT SHOULD NEVER HAVE BEEN PLACED INSIDE MY FIBERGLASS POOL. THE OWNER CONTINUES TO ASK ME IF MY POOL IS HOLDING WATER WHEN HE KNOWS THAT HE HAS SENT SOMEONE TO MY HOME 4 TIMES FOR THE SAME ISSUE. HE CONTINUES TO POST A TEXT FROM ME ON THE 1 AND ONLY 1 DAY THAT MY POOL LOOKED GOOD AND WAS OPERABLE. THE MORNING AFTER THE PICTURE I HAD LOST 1/3 OF THE WATER IN MY POOL! CANNOT GET THEM TO ANSWER THE PHONE OR CALL ME, ONLY DOES TEXT! I AM HIRING AN ATTORNEY, REPORTED TO BETTER BUSINESS BUREAU BUT MOST IMPORTANT WANT TO GET THE WORD OUT SO THAT NO ONE WILL HAVE TO GO THROUGH THIS NIGHTMARE. I SPENT ALMOST SIX THOUSAND DOLLARS, IT HAS BEEN OVER 5 WEEKS, I HAD A POOL THAT WAS LOW MAINTENANCE AND NEVER LEAKED WATER AND NOW I HAVE A POOL IN MY BACKYARD THAT WILL NOT HOLD WATER. THE OWNER CLEARLY KNOWS THAT THIS WELL POINT HOLE THAT HIS COMPANY CREATED SHOULD NOT HAVE BEEN INSTALLED IN THE BOTTOM OF MY FIBERGLASS POOL, ONE WOULD THINK AFTER 4 ATTEMPTS TO REPAIR AND ME CONTINUING TO FILL THE POOL THAT THIS IS CLEARLY A PROBLEM BUT HE CONTINUES TO SAY DOES YOUR POOL CURRENTLY HAVE WATER IN IT LETS WAIT AND SEE WHAT HAPPENS. HIS TEXT SAY HE IS PUZZLED. HE KNOWS EXACTLY WHAT IS GOING ON AND WHAT NEEDS TO BE DONE TO CORRECT THIS. SHAME ON THIS OWNER AND THIS COMPANY. THEY MAY HAVE SOME 5-STAR REVIEWS BUT LOOK DEEPER AS I AM NOT THE ONLY ONE! STAY AWAY!

"Hello. Thank you for review . Contract for re-fiberglass existing pool was sign on 2-10-20. At that time start day was set for 3-18-20 based on customer request. Work started as planned on 3-18-20. Contracted work finished on 3-23-20 and customer send message about some spot not to be perfect same day. Five-Star Pool representative inspect pool and offer polish our area in questions. Customer did not agree on proposed solution and insist on having pool drain and sand all surface a re-do all top coating. Five-Star Pool is one if few companies who want to have customer happy, so we agree on option customer insist on. Pool was drain and re-coated on 3-30-20. Customer was very happy and paid final payment on 4-4-20. On Saturday 4-11-20 customer send message about pool water level drop 2" and on same day Five-Star Pool technician inspect pool conditions and schedule repair work for Monday 4-13-20. That time leak inside skimmer (not Five-Star Pool responsibility) was sealed with epoxy and leak are pool main drain was sealed with epoxy. There was also complaint from customer on Five-Star Pool - Face Book page where you can see all photos and communication with customer and representative from Five-Star Pool on 4-14-20 to try find out if there is any issue with pool at the time but there is not reported issue after multiple direct questions to customer. Five-Star Pool also repeatedly aware customer that there is warranty for pool and customer can contact us anytime with any concerns. Five-Star Pool apologies for any inconvenience link to construction and it's process but definitely not agree that there would be poor craftsmanship or poor communication or customer service. All customer concerns were addressed immediately and work was performed above and beyond industrial standards."

This was for an entire pool resurface, new pump and filter, and pavers. We are very happy with the results. It was great to have a company that could do both the poll and the pavers over the existing deck. Customer service was great as well as workmanship.

I would recommend them with qualifications. The actual deck was done beautifully. Their engineers are skilled, but their laborers are sloppy and they never explained what a mess would be left for us to clean up when they were finished. It took a week of repeated scooping out four inches of rubble, stone and silt from the bottom of our pool, then scraping off grout stuck to the pool bottom and sanding off the stains. They offered to drain the pool and clean it for another $400, but our pool is too old to drain without the risk of the sides cracking and they wouldn’t do it without. I think for $5,000 they should have left the scene beautiful and spotless. It was a mess. We also had the expense of a new pool pump as the stress of the cleanings was too much for it. Now that we’ve cleaned it all up, the new deck is very nice; don’t know if it was worth the aggravation.
Response from Five Star Pool
"Dear Marion, Thank you for review. I have to disagree that our workers are "sloppy" but to install pavers and coping around a pool full of water is definitely a "messy job" and that is why we include "drain and clean up" process to your estimate to begin with. You were the one who removed this item "clean up" out of estimate and decided to proceed with "clean up" of your pool on your own to save money. When you decided you would clean up the pool inside yourself from the beginning your review sounds unreasonable. We did clean up the front and back yard per contract. The job was finished on time, inspected and paid in full. We still thank you for your business and hope you enjoy your patio. Have a great day. Team Five Star Pool"
