I engaged the services of Randal Strain, the owner of By Design Landscape, to undertake a landscaping and lighting project at my residence. In order to purchase the required light fixtures, Mr. Strain requested an upfront payment of $1,500, which I provided via check. However, Mr. Strain never returned to carry out the job and cited health issues as the reason for his absence. Despite repeated attempts to contact him through calls and texts, he failed to respond. As a result, I have decided to take legal action against him by filing a lawsuit in small claims court. It's worth noting that a friend of mine had also hired Mr. Strain previously, but had an unfortunate experience with his workmanship on her sprinkler system. She had to engage someone else to redo the job correctly, incurring additional costs. Based on my experience and my friend's, I advise others to avoid hiring By Design Landscape and Randal Strain, as his reputation is questionable.

We contacted 3 companies listed on Angies list that were well rated for installing French Drains.  After interviewing those 3 we also got a bid from Randy Strain of By Design Landscape.  We were more impressed with Randy than the others for several reasons: ((1) He came to the job site himself and did the work himself, along with an assistant.  Several of the other companies we contacted were owner/salesmen and didn't do the work or stay at the jobsite while the work was done.  (2) His prices were very competitive, not the lowest but nearly the lowest of the 4 quotes we got.  (3) We liked his personality.  He seemed like an honest, knowledgable, hardworking professional and that turned out to be true.  Randy came out the day he said he would with one assistant and got right to work.  He encountered an unexpected problem with an unfortunately placed large pool pipe, but resolved the problem in a time consuming but effective way.  The next day he came out alone and put in a paver pad and steps.  He has a lot of knowledge about things related to the yard.  We are using him again in a few weeks to install outdoor lighting.
