Very Disappointing and deceptive. Contacted and received a quote/contract on December 2, 2022 to fix elevator damaged by hurrican Ian. Agreed to price and sent in signed contract for $18,934 with down payment 50% of $9,500 on Dec.12, 2022. Lead time for repairs was 2-3 months which we agreed to. After contacting this company many time (emails and phone calls), they keep delaying. then in July, they finally came back out to verify repairs and then informed us that the pricing for the repairs parts had gone up substantially and that they would not honor our contract. Said they would be going to a show in September and maybe finding something there, but to look for another company to repair or replace. After the show, they said they didn't have any options. We requested return of our deposit which they agreed to, but then after agreeing, sent an email stating they would be charging us a $500 administration fee which wasn't in their contract nor did we agree to. Now they don't return phone calls, messages or emails and haven't returned our deposit of $9,500. Looks like this will be going to the lawyers to handle!
Response from That Elevator Guy
"We certainly apologize for any confusion with the homeowner. We went to the elevator convention on 9/12/23 with the intent of finding new dealers that could help restore their 35 yr old elevator that is out of date, in addition to also keeping their small hoistway in mind. The original installer and maker is out of business, for years. The morning after the convention we woke up to find an email from the owner stating they found someone else to do the work. That's fine but according to their review above they failed to mention this. We do have proof. In addition, we took a small much needed and well deserved vacation after the show but since we didn't immediately get their deposit back they decided on the review above. Elevators are a luxury item and do in fact take time, each and every one of them. Most of our clients do understand the build back process will take time since there is so much of it."

I recently purchased an older home with a two story elevator. Soon afterwards, I could tell the cab was not staying in place and the elevator had to reposition itself about every hour. I contacted That Elevator Guy, and they came out to diagnose the issue. I was given an estimate and the valve was repaired to the estimated cost on a following appointment. During this repair, a second issue arose with the systems computer, showing an error light that was not on before. I felt That Elevator Guy, was more than fair in finding a solution and working with me to avoid extra expense. We both agreed, the oil valve would have nothing to do with the computer, so the computer was repaired at cost. There were other minor maintenance items that needed repaired, which are now completed. I can say my elevator is now working as new.
That Elevator Guy is responsive, communicates well, and most of all has integrity. I enjoy working with them and glad I found a company that specializes in home elevators.

I was happy to hear that he got the business from his dad. He was here on time , he was very efficient and explained how to manage the elevator when and if we had a power failure. He also told us what to do if we were caught inside the elevator with no way of getting out.. we tested his method and it worked . We feel a lot more confident now . I recommend him highly.

When the 2nd company came out to look it over and give me an estimate, I described what had been happening with the elevator. He listened and said, before he had looked at anything, I think I know what is wrong and asked me to come with him to take a look. He opened up the casing and said, and quot;Yes, that's what I thoughtand quot;. He showed me how the hose, which is inside the oil reservoir, was disconnected. He explained that can happen over time if the hose is not tightened ON AN ANNUAL SERVICE CALL!!!! He reconnected it, added 5 quarts of oil, and explained that both the hose and oil levels should have been inspected on an annual call and if that had been done, I wouldn't have had any issue. After about 30 minutes of work, he handed me a bill for $300 and my elevator was happily working away again. He said it was a sham that I had been told I need to do such a major repair.
Here's what THAT ELEVATOR GUY proposed to me. I am so glad I got a second opinion. Saved myself $2700!!!

Response from That Elevator Guy
"That Elevator Guy performed a Routine Maintenance in February that consisted of: Inspection of cable wear, sheave wear, safety circuit test, emergency lowering test, roller wear or distortion, guide lubrication as needed, as well as mechanical parts requiring lubrication, indicator bulb replacement and inspection of all electrical components. This Annual Service has been used by the owner/president for over 25 years. At the end of this service, Bob rode the elevator up and back down with the member. Had it been low on oil, it would not have made it to the top floor. If a hose loosened after the fact that is completely coincidental. The homeowner is going on what one other person said regardless of anything else or any other possibilities. The elevator worked perfectly well for over a month before this new occurrence. To assume a “sham” by our company is absurd. A proposal is just that, a proposal. Per the complaint of our service and not checking the hose properly, Bob went back when the call came in. He went out and checked the oil level with the “Dip Stick” that the pumping unit had and showed the level was fine. He did not stick his arm down in the hydraulic oil to check that hoses were tight, bolts were all tight, etc. This could in fact be done, however all the oil in the system would have to be drained and it would require much work and time. That is NOT in a routine maintenance as the 2nd company’s tech stated. If there are issues with an elevator that are not normal, complaints should be made to the technician so specific areas can be checked thoroughly that have to do with the issues being described. The same goes as when you take your car in for a tune up. There is a “normal” tune up and there are additional things that are checked if there are issues. Bob noticed the age and use of the equipment and “suggested” to her verbally that they would benefit from a new pumping unit system, which includes a new motor, new pump, new valve and new oil for $2963. This also included draining of all oil from system and piping, removing the existing pumping unit, taking it to the shop (as we do not do onsite replacement work such as this due to the mess it creates) as well as all labor and warranty. The member wrote back after reviewing the proposal and said she would talk to her husband, who was out of town, and that it was more than they expected. In an e-mail response back to her that same day on April 10, 2013, we responded “No problem, we always welcome outside bids”. It was never mentioned that “no one else could do it for less”. However, finding out they paid $300 for 5 quarts of oil and 30 minutes of time from the “Large reputable company” makes us wonder. We are fair and honest with all our clients and there are many. We are sorry they feel they were “shammed” by us. However this is simply not the case. Issues can arise at any time. In fact, as they stated in the complaint, we recommended a second opinion. We performed a routine maintenance as outlined and no refunds ($215) are due to them as we still performed our standard service to their elevator, as outlined in their invoice. Should they find in the near future that they are indeed in need of new equipment; we will stand by our original proposal."
