Signed the contract on 7/2/24 and gave him a check for 3,000.00. the total amount was 6,000.00. I was so happy to find someone to build these since all the companies I called were too busy. I even wrote on the contract I would give him a $2,000.00 tip if done to my satisfaction. He called my husband on the following Saturday and said he went to Tampa and got the wood, never mentioning it was not what we picked out. He said it's called blond wood, but you have to stain it. So I said "Guess we have to live with it. He came on Monday, July 8th, and took our cabinets that my husband spent all weekend taking out. And he said he was going to use it as a template. He measured nothing. he came back a few days later with a base, omg what a mess, nothing level. My husband felt sorry for him because he has issues, is very slow, talks out loud to himself, and just stands there and stairs. Came back on the 15th with a cabinet that had two doors he set it in place, it was not level and he made the left inside too short. The doors had a 2-inch gap, I questioned that and he just continued to hang the upper right cabinet. I came out again and said "You cut those doors too short" he said they just needed to be adjusted. I may be a woman but my father and grandfather were carpenters, and I know they will never adjust that much. So he takes a screwdriver and sure enough they are already adjusted as far as they will go. I told him he had to make new doors and he told me "In about 7 months they will expand and should go together. SEVEN MONTHS? My husband was still trying to help him, but he told him about the upper cabinet not being level, and not made correctly. Doug got mad and left, saying he would come back at 6 pm. Which he did not do. also on 7/1/24, he said he needed the other $3,000.00 to get more supplies. I foolishly gave him another check for that amount. He never came back from the 20th through the 28th. He came on the 29th stood in front of cabinets and my husband pointed out all the gaps, he went to Home Depot and bought some putty. My husband was upset and told him he needed to redo everything. Did not come back on the 30th I called him on the 31st and asked him to please fix these cabinets. He did not come back till 8/6/24 and said this job was too much for him, and that he was doing the best he could. My husband said "Doug, maybe your best isn't good enough" You told us you were a third-generation carpenter. With that he went to his truck to leave, my husband said we want our money back, and he said you're not getting it. We are 74 and 76 years old and I feel he took advantage of the elderly. We would like our money returned to us.
