on Let the buyer beware! My wife and I hired Mr. Cowels based on being told (by him) he was a competent contractor that did flooring for a living. I know this man and knew him to be working steadily and felt good that he could fit us into his schedule. We discussed a price for the work to be done (approx 1500 sq ft.) and didn't feel the quote he said he would perform the work for was enough and offered a higher price to help him out. We knew he had had some medical problems and felt a higher price could help him out. We agreed on a price and shook hands on it. We purchased the tile flooring from Home Depot and Mr. Cowels picked it up from the store and delivered it to the house. We asked him if he needed us to buy spacers and was told he had his own and would use them. We gave him full access to our house so he could perform the work without either of us being there. He started in the living room. He worked very slowly. Too slowly. We got home from work one day and found that the tile in the kitchen did not line up with the dining room and breakfast nook on either side. It was off by about 7 or 8 inches. We told him that was not good and had him take it up and re-do it. The end result was still not satisfactory. In the long run it seems that he really didn't know what he was doing. The spacers were not used and there are tiles lines that curve. There are also tiles that are not level and are offset from the surrounding tiles. Mr. Cowels did not properly clean up after applying the grout and left a thin film of grout on the tiles and around and on the fireplace. We are going to have to tear up all the tile he laid down and re-do our floors. Thanks to his shoddy work we are out over $4000. I am including photos of some of his work so the public can see and judge for themselves.
