"There isn’t a selection for what I hired Dan for: planting new plants and removing dead ones and trimming current landscaping by my home. I trusted that Dan had completed everything according to what I showed him- he even personally placed the plants along the areas he was to plant them in the ground and I went and bought the soil he told me to purchase. He told me he completed everything and was going to come back to put down new border and rock in an area around some of the newly planted items, but he wanted to wait about a week or so to ensure the plants were well rooted. I sent him a text a few days later inquiring about the proper edging as the one he advised me to buy was unavailable. No answer. Then a few days later I went out to water the one side of our home where he was to plant 3 plumerias that were from Hawaii and unique colors. He hadn’t put them in the ground, still lying on the landscaping stone, bare root and dried up. I was devastated. This was in addition to the fact that after he left the house on the day he provided service, my granddaughter noticed he missed planting the umbrella bush as well. He dug up the dead bush it was replacing and left it in the yard with the hole open, just didn’t plant it so he did for me. Thank goodness she caught that one: also within 3 days 3 plants in the front island dried up and died. I do not believe that the plants were of poor quality because all 3 were bought from 3 different vendors- Edison home garden, Powell’s Nursery, and Lowe’s. I am just convinced he didn’t properly plant them. I’ve texted him back to tell him what he did and again, he won’t respond back. He certainly responded when I was setting up a time for him to come by. So I ended up paying $250 for a small sable Palm, a dwarfed crepe myrtle bush, 2 bird of paradise plants, 2 crotons, a heliconia, and 2 alamanda vines and some minor bush trimming on the side of my home. When I told my neighbor she checked the work he was supposed to do on her home. Like me she trusted him that he completed everything; well he didn’t as he missed 2 of the items she wanted trimmed up. She had purchased additional plants but has decided to use another company instead. We are both very disappointed in his so called service work and lack of communication. I hate leaving bad reviews, but I spent a lot of money on these plants and more to put them in the ground and he didn’t come through at all. Seniors beware!"

Mulch and Topsoil questions, answered by experts

The time that it takes to fill in a pool with dirt varies based on the size of the pool and the equipment you have available. Using heavy equipment, like an excavator rather than a shovel, will significantly cut down on the time it takes to complete the project. With the right equipment, it may only take a day or two. However, after the initial filling, the dirt will continue to settle over the following weeks and months. You may need to add more dirt to make the empty area level with the rest of the yard.

Yes, but lightweight furniture may be unstable due to the loose, shifting nature of pea gravel. Heavier furniture with wide legs or a sturdy base works best since it distributes weight more evenly and prevents sinking. To improve stability, you can compact the gravel more in seating areas or place furniture on top of a stabilizing mat or paver stones.

If you’re using crushed stone or gravel as a base material, then yes, you should compact it to prevent movement of the top layers. For instance, if you don’t compact crushed stone or gravel and you lay pavers on top of them, the pavers will shift over time. However, if you’re using gravel or crushed stone as a top layer for aesthetic purposes, you might not want to compact the materials.

How much 4 yards of dirt will cover depends on how deep you want the soil to be. In general, a yard of dirt will cover 324 square feet for a 1-inch depth or 100 square feet for a 3-inch depth. Therefore, you can expect 4 yards to cover between 400 and 1,296 square feet if you keep your soil depth between 1 and 3 inches.

Replace organic mulch every one to two years, depending on the variety. Wood chips and straw, for example, will last a couple of years, while grass clippings and pine needles need replacing every several months. Inorganic mulch—such as rock and rubber chips—can stay in place for up to four years, depending on erosion and general garden upkeep.
