Plant It Forward, LLC

About us

Why is Plant It Forward’s slogan ‘Conscientious Landscape Design’? Simply stated: “We’re passionate about creating inspirational and practical landscapes in a responsible manner.” We founded, and named, our family run business on the basic principle of doing the right thing, both by our clients and the environment. Here’s how we do it: • We dislike waste, in any capacity, and will repurpose customer’s plants and materials whenever and wherever appropriate. • We specify the “right plants in the right place”, to avoid disappointment. • We design those dream property plans or create elements for fixed budgets. • We’re not affiliated with any nursery or paver company, so you’ll always receive unbiased and specialized advice catered to your project. Which means you will never be upsold on extra items or services that you probably don’t need. • The designer has an Architecture degree from England, and holds certifications in Arboriculture, Horticulture and Pesticide Application through ISA., FNGLA and FDACS respectively. • …and finally, it’s not about the money. The lead designer works full time for a local government agency. Plant It Forward, LLC is simply a hobby business. As such we’re able to retain our passion for creating unique landscape designs without worrying about putting food on the table or paying bills. You’re quite literally paying for our time and knowledge…nothing more! Thank you for adding us to that list of companies you’re pleased to have discovered!

Recently I purchased a new home in a neigborhood swarming with wildlife. After erecting a bird feeder, I became hooked on bird watching and knew it was time to redo my front bed to attract more birds, butterlifes and bees. So I turned to Master Gardner, horticulturist and arborist, Dan Fendley of Plant it Forward LLC. I hit the jack pot. His knowledge of plants native to our area that would be perfect for attracting nautre all year-round is astounding. Not only will these pollinators atrract all sorts of wildfile, but they will also provide color in the garden throughout all the seasons. And, his design, is so beautiful. Workign with Dan Fendley is a dream come our. His work is the envy of all my neighbors.

It was a pleasure working with Dan Fendley/Plant it Forward. He helped me see the potential of my backyard with his design plan and navigate the process of finding a landscaper to implement his design. After calling several local landscapers and not getting assistance, I found Dan online. From my initial call and email Dan has always responded in timely manner and patiently provided detailed answers to all my questions. His customer service is excellent - called to confirm our appointments, arrived on time, he listened, the on-site survey was thorough and detail oriented, communicated and set expectations for the services he provided, and followed up to ensure I was happy. I was very impressed with his design that turned my sloped backyard that carries rain water to a retaining pond, to a space that is inviting and makes me want to sit out back. I highly value Dan’s services and knowledge and would strongly encourage anyone to work with him. You will not be disappointed.

We asked Dan Fendley, who is a landscape designer, Master Gardener, certified arborist and horticultural professional to tell us his solution to our problem. He suggested leveling off the area with sand, and then sod. We agreed and hired him. He gave me a schedule as to when a truckload of sand would arrive (it did on time!). He shoveled the sand into a wheelbarrow, and after several trips to the back yard, he then spread it out onto a 8-10 sq. ft. area. After a couple of days, the scheduled sod arrived (also on time, and freshly cut pieces) and he placed the pieces to cover the area. I was amazed and so pleased to see my back yard level. The grass has taken root and is growing beautifully. Of course I would recommend Dan Fendley for any landscaping project or problem.

Mr. Fendley did a superb job for us which exceeded our expectations. The choice of plants reflected a very good knowledge of appropriate material. He was courteous, helpful and answered questions about any landscaping issues that came up.

In the fall of 2014, Dan came out to my home and patiently listened to me attempt to describe the scrambled and completely clueless 'vision' I had in my head for my dream of a backyard paradise.  He spent a good hour and a half with me, walking every inch of my yard so he could see 'his blank canvas' from all angles.   He listened to my priorities, which were providing for the birds, butterflies, safety of my pets, and the must for easy maintenance.  He came back about a week or so later and showed me the layout he had created...he really captured the spirit of my 'vision' and took the time to describe each plant on the drawing and explain why he chose same.    We discussed a couple of 'tweaks', which he had absolutely no problem with whatsoever, as arrogance is definitely not one of Dan's characteristics.  He came back a short time later with the adjustments and everything appeared to be perfect.
We had the plants put in late fall, and of course, at that time, everything was basically getting ready for winter, so between the size of the new plants and their preparing for the cold, the yard really wasn't much to look at, so I had to stick with the 'vision' in my head for a bit longer.  I was so excited to see what everything would look like... it was like waiting for Christmas!   In April things finally started to take shape, and by June...I had the most amazing backyard paradise you could ever imagine!  My birds felt safe, the butterflies were too many to even count, my dogs had all kinds of new things to smell (and attempt to pee on, unfortunately), and I finally had a place where I could shut out the world and just relax.  Dan got it so RIGHT!   From every angle my yard is a beautiful and easy to care for work of art.
Since then, I've contacted Dan a few times (most recently this past Jan/Feb), just to get his thoughts on winterizing and the addition of a couple of new plants, and he has been awesome with his responses.  Not just quick answers and blow offs... he was actually interested in what I had to say and was asking, and he showed that by putting incredible detail and useful advice in all of his responses.  Dan put so much time and thought into his responses, i even offered to pay him, which he graciously refused.
I wholeheartedly recommend using Dan for any and all landscape advice.   He loves what he does, and most importantly, he respects and listens to your thoughts and 'vision' (no matter how 'scrambled') without being condescending or a jerk (like quite a few of the other landscapers I've come across here in Tallahassee).

Dan is very professional, and was absolutely hands on all aspects, from measuring, planning, drawing, picking out plants that would thrive in the area.

The work was done promptly. It looks great and instructions were given to make sure sufficient watering would be done by me. Previously, a local nursery charged me 800 to remove 2 other Sage and to plant 2 trees in its place.

It was a WONDERFUL experience.  Dan is a true professional that understands not only plants but can understand the vision that people have for their yards... HIs design included the feel I was wanted for the property  and every plant I said I like? The final design has everything I wanted in a yard, the color, tropical feel, southern comfort, safety for the animals? and charm ?. It has the privacy, decks and other features I loved and didn't even know how to ask for... He understood what I wanted better than I did... The design is delightful?.  It is truly a work of art and I am SO pleased...
The entire process was fun, educational and a pleasure... As this review started... It was a WONDERFUL experience.
