This was BY FAR the WORST experience my husband and I have ever had with a contractor in Miami. STEER CLEAR. We saved up our hard earned money to finally do a major overhaul on our severely dated kitchen as well as several other upgrades to our AC unit, electrical and flooring. Lenny met with us first and seemed like the nicest guy in the world. We signed the contract with little hesitation and a good feeling, assuming we were in good hands based on all the good reviews. We were told the work would be completed in 5-6 weeks which seemed like a reasonable amount of time. Well, let's just say we started the process in May of 2018 and work was not finished until the end of September. Imagine being without a kitchen for almost 5 full months. We were introduced to Jose Vega who seemed like a nice guy and they started demo within the first couple of days of signing the contract. He seemed nice enough and would chat with us off and on about how things were going, putting our minds at ease. Things deteriorated quickly. The crew started not showing up for days at a time. The excuses started flowing and got more and more creative. I have to say, we believed Vega when he said, "my wife has cancer treatments" and even got really elaborate saying she had ovarian cancer. We felt terrible and I actually considered sending him a get well basket because I felt so bad, but I have to admit I believed him. Who would lie about such a thing? Then, I started finding beer bottles in my kitchen and garage with leftover food all around my backyard. During July, they didn't show up for 3 weeks. I had NO FLOOR in my kitchen whatsoever and was walking on a piece of plywood and exposed floor joists. Not to mention, the house was open to the wonderful Florida vermin that run around - cockroaches etc. My poor husband had to take off days of work and I cannot tell you how many arguments they got into. He would call Lenny to complain who often did absolutely nothing, clearly having no control (or care) over the situation and his subcontractors. Not to mention, once we finally got the floor put down and the work began to move forward, many of the things they did had to be done multiple times due to shoddy workmanship. For example 1) we told them we had a gas stove - they drill holes for electrical line and and removed our gas line - thankfully we noticed it and they had to fix it. 2) they installed the refrigerator with hot water connected to the water line so the drinking water would come out hot. Then, the water line broke and caused a huge mess and had to be replace. 3) the kitchen floor tiles were laid down completely crooked and incorrectly. I came home to a crew of 6 people (including Vega's extremely sick wife who look completely fine) just haphazardly laying down the tiles and then walking all over them when the grout was still wet! of course the next day the grout was cracked and tiles were lifting up. They had to send a tile guy out 3 times to redo them. 4) The center kitchen island had to be relocated because they decided to install the hood before the island making it look extremely off center. My husband even told them to measure and run the vent pipe in the beginning when the ceiling was completely open before the recessed lighting was put in. Vega decided to do it at the last minute after all the cabinets were installed so had to rig it to look right, it still does not. 5) the cabinets were installed by Mr. Magoo himself - almost comically crooked. Not to mention the cabinet guy left for Cuba for 6 weeks so the work halted again until he got back. Then I had to see him 2-3 more times to make adjustments. When they pulled one of the cabinets down, they put a huge dent in the new drywall which I need to look at to this day. 6) We noticed a leak in our patio roof and asked them to patch it. It took them several tries and the roof still leaks. 7) the tile guy attempted to install the backsplash but ran out of tile so left a gap about 2 inches from the bottom of the overhead cabinets. The ONLY GOOD THING Vega did was literally re-do the entire thing - he cut the tiles so they would fit perfectly and it actually does looks nice. The bottom line is, at the end of the day we were not happy at all and even entertained consulting lawyers. We are concerned the work they did will not hold up and we'll have major issues down the road. Ultimately they completed the work, 4 months behind schedule, but not without constant prodding and arguing. Vega would show up looking for advances for materials, but we told him several times they aren't seeing another cent until work moved forward. After telling Lenny we were unhappy, he offered us a $50 Outback Steakhouse gift card (laughable) which we never even received. I would never recommend this vendor to my worst enemy. STAY AWAY.

We wanted to convert our garage into more living space. We had a number of people come out to give estimates. Of course, a few never showed up. Lenny with star construction was one of the handful that did. We had a few quotes that came in cheaper but they weren't honest with the scope of work that would need to be done. This is where Lenny and star construction shined. He came in and told me honestly EVERYTHING that was going to have to be done to get the project up to code. His estimate came in to the penny. He was forthright about having to change electric panel and adding driveway space to meet code. After we signed on with star, Lenny became even more of a "star". He constantly fought with the city on our behalf for the necessary permits. After a lengthy battle he obtained the necessary permits. Vega came in to head the construction aspect and was also a "star". They obtained every necessary inspection and passed each one with flying colors on the first attempt. Everything was completed on time and it was a wonderful experience. I would NOT hesitate to use Star Construction in the future.

I opened the door to the garage one day and there was light coming in the original 1959 wooden garage door and i realized it was bowing out and the header was slipping down. I talked to garage door companies and they were unwilling to touch it because it would require structural engineering to bring up to hurricane code. No handyman would touch it because it was too big of a job for them, and I talked to several general contractors who would either refer me to a structural engineer who couldn't seem to coordinate with anyone, or they weren't interested because it wasn't a big job. One contractor said he only did highrises. And then I talked to Lenny, and he wound up coordinating everything and everyone. The county inspections, the extra electrical work, the engineering, the concrete work and the rebar work, custom sizes, everything. Very happy!
The crew came out, worked quickly & professionally, cleaned up after themselves. Lenny was very responsive and always returned phone calls in a timely fashion. The price was more than reasonable.
I am working on my house piecemeal, and I would not hesitate to use him again.I just wish I had found him for the last big job!

This is by far the worst experience we had (and we hired several contractors for this remodeling as you can see in our other reviews). We actually took a couple of months after everything was over, but our opinion remains intact. Lenny is a nice guy very charismatic, but the crew is absolutely unprofessional and he cannot control them. We ended up kicking out the crew in August without the job completed. It was a nightmare.

We hired Star Co (Lenny) in March to re-pipe and remodel three bathrooms, and build a closet according to our approved plan. They sent an estimate and we accepted it without any counter. It was reasonable and we wanted to have the house remodeled as soon as possible.
The crew manager was Angel Vega, STAY AWAY FROM THIS PERSON. a real piece of work. We spent four months taking his lies (i.e. that he didn?t show up because his wife died which of course never happened), disrespectful behavior (i.e. he would call me ?girl? ?nena?, called me a liar, and make a move on my 20yo Babysitter), aggressiveness (i.e. he would scream at us and even invited my husband to fistfight? not kidding), until we were-fed up and were forced to ban him.
Vega was always trying to convince us to do things that we didn?t want to, for his own benefit. At one point he wanted to convince us that the vent should be in the middle of the master bath (although the plans showed it in the wall) and that we should do a column there ( I am not kidding), he claimed that the city code required that. We asked the city and the architect, they told us that it was not right. Then he confessed he gave the plumber the wrong measures and he didn?t want to pay him for his work again. Of course he moved the vent to the wall at his cost. According to Vega nothing was included in the work order. He wanted to charge more for every little thing (like painting the bath ceiling or having a power line for the Jacuzzi although the Jacuzzi installation was included?ridiculous), or the tile installation that he claimed us that was not included at all in the remodeling of the bathroom (!!) we added an additional work order to have it included just to have him out of the house.
  • Vega would not show up for days (even weeks). He claimed he had other jobs in parallel (some with Lenny and some on his own). When we complained about it, he would send the crew for a couple of hours (literally) and make them leave. In the first 90 days they only showed up 7 entire days (6 hours) and 5 days they came a couple of hours. At that point we were fed up and my husband start pushing Lenny to make them work. In the last 30 days, my husband took several days off and acted as contractor, pushing everybody to move, advancing money for materials.
  • Vega would not buy the materials (although we pay the advance as requested) so the job was completely stopped for weeks. My husband talked to the workers and found out that they would not advance because they didn?t have the materials so we start paying for them and deduct them from the final balance and then they started to move. Vega loved this and started to order us what to buy!!!!
  • Vega is also messy and stubborn, he would claim that he couldn?t work because the materials were not there. We had to move his garbage personally to show him personally where they were.  He was also disloyal, he would offer to do jobs on the side without involving Lenny.
  • After screaming at me and having a big argument with my husband, we ended up banning him from the worksite (my house) and threatening Lenny to call the police in case he showed up. The crew is the same kind. They are lazy, filthy, thieves and unprofessional and their final work resulted in a disaster.

The would show up at my house and chill out under my palms, in my backyard. One would work and three would be watching. They even took naps in our kids playhouse for god?s sake!. At one event they were even drinking beer in my backyard and called us liars until we showed them photos and only then apologized!!!!!!
They would drop garbage in our plants, in our patio and in the grass. They never picked up after themselves, my husband and my son picked up the all the garbage they could find. We keep finding bottles, sandwich wraps and other stuff everywhere.
They never covered anything with plastic, ruining our furniture and floors. In several occasions my husband and me had to do it personally (while they were looking at us) because they wouldn?t move. They even gave us directions on how to cover the furniture while standing there watching us!!!!!
They broke our sprinklers and never fixed it. After a month, I forced them to come and fix it. They came three times and always left something broken. Finally my husband personally moved a pallet with concrete and showed them another hole. They fixed it but broke another one. Finally my husband fixed it himself.
The work they made was terrible. They did everything at least three times. They did one bathroom with the tiles absolutely crooked, my 3yo could have done it better. Their actual excuse was that the wall that this same person built was crocked?. I pointed out that he made it and he just blanked. They were doing the other bath and we forced Lenny to act and change the
installer. A new guy came from a different crew (Jose Rivera, which I strongly recommend) and Lenny bought the materials again. Still one bath remains a very poor work.
They didn?t want to go to the roof to pass the electric wires. They claimed they didn?t want to because it is hot and itchy. They spent months trying to avoid it until they had to do it, so they did a hole in the ceiling in every room so that they could stick their heads instead of going up.
At the end, when we kicked them out they were trying to steal boxes with unopened tiles. They took some of my husband tools (a pick, a shovel and a Wheel-barrel among others), which they took from the house because ?they needed them?. Lenny intervened and they took back a couple of tools but not all of them.

We were extra patient and gave several chances but it was ridiculous. I ended up with nervous breakdown, and my husband with high pressure events. He had to took several days off to keep track on the mess they made, and had to take vacations days to finish the job himself. Even the inspectors from the City urged us to terminate their contract pointing that this crew was totally unprofessional.
In case you have doubts, and something seems unreal (believe I would totally understand the feeling) feel free to contact us.  We have everything documented. Emails, photos, videos. It was a nightmare and we are happy that this is over.
To Sum up, Lenny is a good guy but he cannot handle Vega.Vega is a crook. His team is absolutely unprofessional. The combination is lethal.

I WOULD NEVER DEAL WITH THIS PEOPLE AGAIN

The work went quickly, and Lenny and Jose were professional and knowledgeable. When we discovered the damaged support beam, Lenny did not pressure us to have the extra work done but explained the situation. Jose and his crew installed the new beam securely with quality workmanship. They did the job right!  The finished product is solid and beautiful. As predicted by Lenny, the replacement pebbles in the patched patio do not match exactly, but they are so close that I think that with time they will fade so that the difference will be unnoticeable. What is most important is that the posts and beam are secure and our roof is not going anywhere. On top of this, both Lenny and Jose were friendly, easy to work with and cared that the job was done with excellence. Great job! Hire them!
P.S. I just had a roofer come out for an estimate, and he complimented the craftsmanship of the beam and poles installed by Star Construction. They pass every test with flying colors!

They started the work in march and are not finished here in July. ?They work on other jobs and mine falls to the wayside. Also I feel that I am being charged for things that should have been in the contract (like permits, inspections, and fixtures) They also cut into a sprinkler line and I had to pay $75.00 to have that fixed. ?They are too slow, they will leave me for days to work on other jobs. This is rental property that I can not rent out until the job finished.

"This is an old customer for whom we did an addition over 17 years ago. She was delighted to find we were still in business . I did explain when executing a new contract for some improvements, that building codes have changed and building inspections are required for each stage of work. Also, as stated in our Contract Agreement...City building permits would be at "cost" sincwe we have no way of pre-determining all the fees. The delay was not as she stated but due to "special order" Impact windows and an Impact approved in-swing Exterior door which was also a custom-special order and took several weeks to process. There were no "extra" charges except for $ 100.00 which she requested extra work for enlarging the patio steps. I visited with her recently and she paid the final balance on the Conract without any hesitation. The work did involve, Electrical, Masonry walls, Furring, Insulation & drywall, painting, doors, windows, Including demolishing a front porch. I understand her anxiety in finishing the work quickly as this is a rental unit. However, any reasonable person knows that there are stages to a construction project and required City inspections that must be performed to meet the Building codes. There was also Engineering drawings and permit processing that was included in our Agreement at no extra charge. These plans took several weeks to be drawn and reviewed by the Miami Gardens Building Department before the permit could be issued. I honestly believe that Mrs. Milner would redact her unsatisfactory comments if questioned. She was totally satisfied with the work but disturbed over the length of time, which is justifiable due to the above explanations."

Dedicated, punctual and most of all, very professional.
Despite the unexpected issues inherent to that kind of projects Lenny and his crew managed to stay on schedule and did the best they could!

"The job ran over budget due to some unforseen circumstanaces. The additional costs were due to issues with the Engineer for the Building Division in the Town of Surfside, Fl. This neccesitated us to redraw the entire set of building plans that was originally submitted by our Architectural-Engineer for permit. We were finally issued a permit in accordance with the revised plans. During construction, the Building inspector required us to deviate from the approved plans and upgrade some strructural beams (headers) for the opening for the Impact sliding glass doors, resulting in some additional costs both to us and the home owner. All inspections were approved and the work was finally completed, resulting in a much improved design and enhanced living facility with added comfort & convenience for the homeowner."

"This was a complex job as we added an addition across the front of the house which was non conforming to the current building codes. The job location was in the City of Miami Springs, a small community with its own building department We reviewed the building plans with the owners who requested some small changes..The owners signed and approved the plans and a revised set of plans was submitted to the City for approval and permit, All structural details, dimensions & specifications were approved by the City Engineer and plan processors, ie, plumbing, electric, mechanical, etc. As required, during construction, we called for an inspection dor structural columns & beams. The inspector, who is also the chief of the building department, contradicted the engineers approved plans and required additional structural work to be done. The owners were advised of the required changes and was given the opportunity to discuss these matters with the chief of the building dept. The owners agreed to the work and approved an Extra Work Order for the additional costs. Naturally, this also required additional work and additional construction time. We had to order special Impact windows to match some existing windows we were reinstalling. This also created some delay. At the time of final inspection, the owners seemed very pleased and satisfied with the overall project. Everyone who saw the addition was very impressed with the quality and workmanship and felt it was a first class job. Even to match exterior panelling that was over 20 years old. No complaints were ever indicated to us."

It was a lot of work, but it was finished in a timely manner.  I didn't like that part, but I am satisfied with their work overall.  I was planning on having them do some lawn and yard work too.  The foreman was very knowledgeable.  He really knew what he was doing.  It's hard to find people who know what they are doing.  They have so many contractors in here.  People wouldn't even crawl under the house to see what's going on.  I would recommend Star Construction Co.

"As the member stated, she called us out to repair some water damages to her kitchen and bathroom floors. After reviewing the problem we entered into an agreement to repair a small section of floor in her kitchen area. After excavating a section of the floor, we showed her latent deterioration of the existing floor joists. This necessitated removing the entire kitchen floor including all the kitchen cabinets. We replaced all the floor joists, repaired the plumbing leaks, installed new sub flooring and new laminated flooring. Then we re-installed all the cabinets and reconnected her sink, etc. She had agreed to all these changes, including the same procedure to the adjoining bathroom. The bathroom required all new sub flooring, durock underlayment and new tile flooring, and installation of new toilet and vanity. Naturally this all created additional labor, delivery of materials, and additional time for construction. We could not specify a completion date as this was an on going process. I can understand her frustration for the time frame and delays, however, in the final analysis, she was very satisfied with all the work."

When I talked to them they seemed very experienced and they responded very quickly. The initial quote that I got was around 5 or 6 thousand dollars. It was a bad experience they never told me about all the city permits that I had to pay, inspectors, and payments to the city. It was just a very bad experience with them. I would tell other people to make sure that they tell them before they start the job all the extra costs that they might run into. One of the things that really upset me was they said they had 40 years of experience but then they told me that they didn't know the city was going to charge that much for the permits and stuff. A company that has so many years of experience should know especially working in Miami for so many years.
    Response from STAR CONSTRUCTION CO
"The Member is a very charming and lovely young lady. She recently purchased a 2 story Town Home in Coconut Grove, Miami, Fl. I reviewed the work scope and we entered into a Contract Agreement for the proposed work. Since the renovation work would require Architectural drawings, Building permits and field inspections by the building departments, I told her that the only thing I could not charge her for was the actual permit fees required by the City of Miami. These fees are determined by the Plan Processors for the City and I could not pre-deterrmine the costs, but would prepay the fees and would show her the City Invoices and to be reimbursed for actual costs. This detail was put in writing in her contract. A slight inaccuracy is that there were sliding glass doors on the upper level to be removed and closed up and a new Impact-special -order Egress window was to be installed. All work was done in a professional & workmanlike manner.,At completion, I met with her and gave her the " Certificate Of Occupancy" by the City. She paid the fnal balance due on completion and never complained about the work...although due to inspections, waiting for her tiles to arrive, special window order....and other items beyond contractors control, did cause a slight delay in completing the work. For these reasons, we do not impose a Bonus or Penalty clause to our Agreement. There were Extra Work Orders requested by the Member, which we performed and which she paid for, consequently increasing the original Estimate.and job cost. The fact that she was upset over the Permit fees are justifiable, however, we have no say or control over these matters My 40 years in the construction business does not preclude the fact that we build in over 32 Municilpalities and each City has their own Building Department, Ordinances, Permit fees, etc. and in no way could I quote any permit fees in advance. As an aside, the City Inspector making the final inspection commented.in our presence;." they did a great job". Unfortunately, the City of Miami has an antiquated system which requires not only a Building permit fee, but extra fees for windows, doors, plumbing, electric, mechanical. etc. With exception of the " permit fees" I see no viable reason for the Members to be dissatisfied with the work performed."

We found Star Construction through Angie's List. The project was a joy for us from start to finish. Leonard Feldman, of Star Construction, responded immediately to look at our house (he made a personal trip and spent quite some time with us) to enlarge our living area. Mr. Feldman is an unbelievably knowledgeable person who sat down with us, actually sketched out a plan and helped us budget for the work. He provided a detailed proposal with a reasonable price. He then engaged an engineer to draw up plans, made sure the permitting was achieved, and oversaw the project. His workmen did exactly what we expected in good time. We got what we asked for and nothing less (and even a little more). This was an anxiety-free project.

He did a beautiful job. He has been in business since about 1980. He belongs to the BBB and the Builders Association of south Florida, the Teachers United Union, and chamber of Commerce. He is licensed and insured. He is really a very honest and reputable gentleman. I have no hesitance at all recommending him. Every step of the way he gives paperwork, so there is not just a hand shake. If anything comes up you can go legally to show that he has contracted to do your work. He is a great kind of a guy.
