I had purchased a discount coupon from Living Social for Kenneth Russell Roof Contracting and called for an estimate to repair two leaks in my roof, one where the garage roof line intersects the house and the roof of the sunroom. Both leaks had been around for a long time, as the previous owner had hid them when we purchase the house in May 2009. Ken came to the house and was very nice. He gave me a verbal estimate of $1800 to repair both leaks, including having to replace all the wood and tile over the small sunroom ( 8x11). He also offered for an additional $1700 to pressure clean and seal the entire roof with professional sealant. I agreed to the price of $3500 for the entire project. He never gave me anything in writing. He had a worker at the house the next morning pressure cleaning and applying the sealant. The next morning two additional workers showed up and began to work on the roof repairs. They were on time and very polite. Ken called me late into the second day and said they had had to replace all of the wood in the sunroom roof and it would be an additional $500. He also said they would be finished in the morning the next day and he would be there to meet me. The next morning Ken never showed up, but his guys finished the job and did a mostly great job cleaning up, again they were on time and very polite. When one of the workers asked for the check, I only paid the agreed upon amount, not the additional $500 for wood that had been included in the original verbal estimate. I never heard from Ken again, nor did I receive a receipt or the promised two year warranty. While I am very happy with the work completed and have high regards for the crew, I was very dissapointed that Ken tried to up the price when they were 80% complete, especially when I know he really over charged me for the pressure cleaning and sealant. My roof is probably 20 years old and I know it will have to be replaced in the next 5-8 years and while I was very pleased with the quality of work I will not be calling Russell Roof Contracting or recommending them due to Ken's shady request for additional funds. Today I sent a letter requesting an itemized receipt, information on the sealant used and the two year warranty by the end of the week or I would be filing a complaint with the BBB.
"Anne I don't know what your complain was. When a roof is estimated one can never know what is under. I charged the additional money in order to replace rotten plywood that was not seen during the initial estimate because the roof was covered. It was not shady because we called you, informed you and agreed on the price, which you never paid regardless. Next when we give an estimate we provide a written estimate, we usually give it in writing or by email. The warranty is included in the estimate. If you wanted an invoice you went to the BBB but never emailed us about it. Once we found out you wanted it we immediately sent it to you."
