My wife and I have been dealing with Dan Rodriguez of Dan the Tiki Man since April of 2022 to have our pool installed. We paid our deposit on April 8th 2022 and they set out to begin the permitting process. We waited and waited, I noticed that the system had corrections that needed to be made, but nobody seemed to be making them and eventually the permits got voided out and they had to resubmit them. They didn't end up refiling for permits until March of 2023. We didn't end up getting our permits until June of 2023. . They brought equipment in July and dug up the backyard. They crashed their equipment into my house, but I was able to get them to eventually fix that (but that was a lot of back and forth to get that accomplished) Once they dropped the pool into place Dan said can you send some money so I can pay my guys. I sent $5,000 because he wasn't specific on an amount at the time. That was July 25th I received a call from their office saying they wanted more and they gave me an amount, so I said ok, give me the number to the finance company you work with (Lyon financial) so I could go through them since it would be less to finance it than it would for me to pull money from an annuity account. Because my wife and I had recently retired they didn't approve us for financing so I told them, ok, I will pull money from my annuity, then I will wire it to you. The money was put into my account and I told Dan I would be wiring and it should hit the next day. The bank ended up freezing it because they wanted to make sure it was not fraud, I spoke with the bank, answered all their questions, they were satisfied and they cleared the wire and it went in 48 hours later, so he got his next payment of $20,014 on 8/4/23 At this point he had over extended himself with multiple pool contracts for other clients and I was lucky if I saw anyone come out once a week. One week I got someone 3 days in a row for electrcial, but aside from that it's been calling and texting to get people to come do work. As soon as the pool equipment was put in, I wired another $6,512 on 9/1/23. they came back a few weeks later to do the electrical properly and then I sent another $7,504.50. So, every time a portion of the job has been completed, I have made payments to them. But we are still stuck with an uncompleted job, He fails inspections due to his own errors and uses them to buy himself time to try and work on a different project. One of the people in his office said he has 29 current pool contracts and does not have the crew to handle them all. I have been in contact with another client of his in the neighboring town of Plantation. A gentleman in a neighboring town who had his pool dropped in June and his job is also not completed. Dan is now saying he wants money up front before he sends a crew out. I am certain that if I were to send him any more money, I would never see that work completed. He still needs to frame and pour concrete around the pool, and he needs to remove all the excess dirt and debris and garbage his crew has left here for months. When we started this ordeal he said, Once we dig the hole, you'll be around 30 days away from a pool. The day they started digging he said, I like to tell people it won't take more than 90 days from this point even though we finish way before that. Well, we are past both of those promises. I know there are more of us around Florida going through the same thing. Dan is the authorized dealer of San Juan fiberglass pools for most of florida. So, there are victims of his incompetence from the keys up to whole Florida east coast. I know there was another pool contractor like this on the west coast of florida, I don't want this guy to be another one of those. Crew will be there Friday to do this, and Saturday to do that. Saturday nobody shows up. Then told they’ll be there Monday morning pending items. No items listed. Monday I reach out since they don’t call or text your first. Says, they will be there 9am tomorrow. Tuesday comes, nobody at 9am. We stressed they need to be there on time as I have to bring my wife to the oncologist at 1pm. So we need them to be on time to do the work they need to do inside the house running electrical to the outside, and then they can take all day doing what they need outside while we are at the hospital. Again, nobody here at 9am nobody here at 10am, no word from anyone. 11am nobody and still no word. So finally got electrician to come out and run the wiring to the panel and hook up the equipment. Had to knock a hole into the wall to run the conduit from the attic to the electrical panel and through to the garage to run outdoors to the equipment. End of the day, left the hole in the wall, said he doesn’t put it back together and someone else will have to. Filter up and running, but they need to send out someone to clean it and load it with salt. Contacted the project manager and Dan. Dan said he would figure it out and coordinate something (it was 3 in the afternoon, could have had someone out here to do it. Project manager texted me back around 9:45pm and said he would let me know when he heard something from Dan. Which means Dan never reached out to coordinate something. Instructions for the lights were wet when he handed them to me, and there were no instructions for important part. The pump and filter. Looking at two weeks of not a single job done on site. Got an inspection failed because the pump they put on the plans was not the pump they installed. So had to wait for a revised plan from the engineer to change the pump on the paperwork rather than change the pump installed. There are countless other tasks they could be doing while waiting for electrical to pass in order to move onto concrete. They could have brought a dumpster, brought a bobcat and removed the debris all over the yard. They could remove the extra dirt they still have in the yard that makes one side 10 inches higher than the other side of the yard and essentially slopes everything back to the pool. Remove, grade it properly so when the electrical passes, they can get right to framing and pouring. Instead of having to do it then. They could be patching the hole in the house they left. They could be patching the chunk they took out of the corner of my house when they crashed the bobcat into it. They could be pressure cleaning the driveway they’ve messed up with their equipment and gravel drops. They could have come out and cleaned the pool or added salt to it since it is a salt water pool with saltwater equipment but no salt! So it’s currently the end of November 2023 and over a month since anyone has done anything out here. I think San Juan Pools makes a great product, but, if Dan is the only authorized dealer in your area, I’d suggest going through Latham or another fiberglass pool company. Because I don’t want anyone else to have to go through all of this and potentially lose a lot of money like others (and there are quite a few others out there)
