$600
After a total of 15 minutes with the doctor, I was shocked to get a $600 bill. My lizard's leg was swollen and he did a culture of the skin, took blood and x-rays. It wasn't broken and he had no external infection, so he assumed it was an internal infection and gave me medication. He said he would call me back in a week when the blood results were in to confirm the infection and make sure my lizard was on the correct dosage of medication. I never got a call back. When I followed up, he said there was no infection but to continue the meds and come back for a follow-up (at an additional charge). There was no improvement to my lizard's leg, so I wasn't investing anymore more money or time into this vet and I took him to another vet. She identified the issue (for $65) . It will be a slow process to recovery, but my total cost at the other vet was $125 (including meds and follow-up).
I understand lizards are considered exotic and it's more expensive to care for them, but $600 was way off course to what I think was fair, especially since he wasn't able to resolve any issue. He also never even warned me how expensive everything was going to cost...just rushed me through the process. My other vet walked me through every step and explained what everything would cost.

I took a cockatoo to Dr. Harris because he was feather-picking. Dr. Harris weighed him and said he was really fat. He told me to lay off the seeds and give him fruits and vegetables. He also did a blood test to make sure the bird's thyroid and liver were okay, and he took a culture to see if the bird had infected feather follicles.
I had to call back to remind him that the test results were due, but that's not a big deal. He prescribed an antibiotic. The bird is down several ounces and looks much better.
Price seemed...not cheap. But I can't say it was out of line. I don't go around comparing vet prices.
Don Harris is a very well-known, highly regarded avian vet. If you need an avian vet in the Miami area, he would be a good choice. It can be hard for parrot owners to find vets who really know parrots, and Dr. Harris is one of the go-to guys in this part of the state. Recommended.

My bluefront Amazon, Nikki, 15 years old, developed a growth under her beak. I had seen Dr. Harris years ago when I had first gotten Nikki in another office, so I looked him up on the Internet and took her to him about the growth. I was able to see him right away. He put her under anesthesia and did a thorough examination, complete with blood tests, etc. I was present with Nikki at all times, which made me feel better than if they had taken her in the back. After the exam and blood tests, it turned out that Nikki has very high cholesterol and that she has these fatty deposits all over her body, including the one under her beak. I was relieved that the growth was not something more serious and the visit alerted me to put Nikki on a diet to lower her cholesterol.

Years ago, I also was taking my cockatiel, Pete, to Dr. Harris because he tested positive for psittacosis. Since he had no symptoms, Dr. Harris and the U of Miami continued testing him each month over a year or so because it was a rarity.

All of my visits to Dr. Harris with all of my birds have been very positive. He is thorough, professional and very knowledgeable. And because he specializes in avian and exotic animals, I feel that he is the expert to go to for my birds.

I considered their price to be a little high. They are known as one of the best clinics for birds in the area, and they are well worth the money you pay. They are responsible and caring and I would recommend them to everyone.
