I narrowed my search down to 4 pool companies using Angie's List and other online reviews. Of the 4 estimates I received, I liked Alligator Pool best. The work included sand blasting the surface of the pool (27x13), fixing an area on the bottom of the pool that had a little crack from replacing a drain previously, replacing the jets and drain cover, re-cementing an area in the corner just under our pavers, re-surfacing the entire pool with diamond brite. Though the initial estimate ($2500) was about the same as one other company, one of the main reasons I went with this company was the owner, Alan. He was very easy to work with, always answered his phone when I called or called me back right away. After I received the estimate and told him I wanted to use him, I asked if he could put a mosaic at the bottom of the pool. He said he could definitely do that and he really liked them. He told me that he could drop by a brochure of samples and if I saw something I liked, he could order it with his discount which is what he would charge me, no other charge. I told him the one I liked and he found out the price for me. I went online and checked around to see if I could find it cheaper, but it was definitely the best price and lower than I had anticipated. I also found some baby turtles that I wanted on my steps, but they weren't in his brochure (I saw them at a tile store). I told Alan about them and asked if he could put those on the steps. He said that would not be a problem and if I went to the store he would make sure they gave me his discount, which I did. One of the other things that Alan recommended was adding a coving to the bottom corners of our pool. Our pool is an older pool that had straight corners like a box. He said it would make it much easier to brush the pool and if we used an automatic pool cleaner, it would make it easier to climb the sides. It was extra, but we decided it was something we should do. Another recommendation was to add tile to the steps around the corners. Currently our tile on the steps was just on the sides, just under the top corner. He explained that it was better for the edge of the steps and that it made it easier to see the edges and not miss a step. He only charged us for the price of the tile and we decided it was a good idea too so we added it as well. We also made sure to get a permit which added to the original estimate. That is how our original quote of $2550 ended up being $4221 (!!) but it was worth it. Our mosaic (which was the bulk of the cost at over $800 including tax) looks beautiful and it's much easier to brush the pool. The steps look great too. Now, as to the actual work. When we called Alan and told him we wanted to go with his company, we told him that we wanted to finish our roof first. He told me to just call him when we were ready. Once we called, he started work within 2 weeks. He came by and hooked up a sump pump to start draining our pool. Then, 2 days later, 2 individuals came out from a company he uses to sand blast the sides (just below the tile). It was very loud and lasted about 4-5 hours. It was pretty messy (not their fault, just the nature of the job), but it was necessary since our walls were in pretty bad shape. Alan also dropped by the mosaic, which was beautiful (a large mermaid and turtle w/shadow). We were waiting for the materials to be delivered, which happened over the next couple of days and then we were working around the rain as well. He sent over 2 of his employees and they put in the coving around the entire pool. The next day, they came back and cemented the mermaid on the bottom (with me telling them where I wanted it), cemented the turtles on the steps where I had placed them, and put the tiles on the steps. Next, they came back with a 3rd employee and resurfaced the entire pool with the diamond brite. We had been a little concerned with the timing because we knew we were going out of town and the rain put us right to the day before we were leaving as we began refilling the pool. Alan assured us there would not be a problem and he would take care of the pool, making sure it didn't overfill and of course taking care of the chemicals. When we came back, we had a beautiful pool to swim in! There were some spots of diamond brite on the pavers and pool deck and they forgot to cement the corner, but I called Alan and he came out and took care of both issues. The only issue I have is that my original tile around the top of the sides needs to be re-grouted, but I didn't really notice that before and didn't include that in my original work request. I told Alan and said he could send over his "tile guy" if I want. It will be extra, but it will finish the pool (for me) completely. I would recommend this company.
