American Pump

American Pump of Melbourne (owner Mike Logston) seemed to do a competent job replacing/installing a pool pump, but after the job was complete and actual bill presented, we learned that his markup on parts was at least 30 percent higher than prices on Amazon/online pool supply houses for the identical items...He charged $480 for a pump than cost $100 less online at SEVERAL online retailers and for one small part he charged 8 times more than online suppliers -- all on top of charging for a service call AND labor AND tax. Plus he failed to fix a leak because he didn't have usable epoxy in his truck! In talking to neighbors after our job was done, we learned we overpaid by at least $200 for the 1-hour fix compared to what they paid for the same job done by other contractors. Wish we knew that before hiring him! True, prices for pool pumps vary depending on model, and he did provide a "ballpark" quote prior to the job, but what he installed isn't the top-level model (despite its price indicating that). After he got paid, he failed to respond to msg asking about the parts markup, and when we reached him, he testily claimed it's not his "job to get you a better price" (despite his website claiming so).

Never showed up for estimate appointment. Company did not call me even after my waiting the entire afternoon in vain for them to show up

I was told the motor had to be replaced, it would take 1 day and cost $475. When I came to pick it up, they had installed a different brand of motor that was to large to fit in my pump stand. Mike suggested that I used a hack saw to modify my pump stand. I left the pump with him and he installed the correct motor. That took 3 more days and cost an extra $75. I have had very good service from American Pump in the past. I am not sure why things seem to have changed. The pump is working well.

Was not told upfront that there would be a fee to diagnose the problem. Wound up costing me $32.50 to find out that the motor was beyond repair and that they recommended buying another rebuilt motor from them for $300. I purchased a complete new pump and motor online for less than $150.

Mike immediately went to work and completed the easy fix in less than twenty minutes.

The service man not only fixed the pump motor - he ran through the whole system and fixed leaks and broken heads from the lawn guy mowing. The guy is a no- nonsense person who just does a good job. You get what you pay for. I will always call American Pump. They have a shop on US1 in Melbourne and you can also take your motor in if you don't want a housecall - but I didn't know anything about taking the motor off, so I wasn't going to try.

What a great company. The honesty in getting my pool pump repaired was refreshing in today's business world. I was ready to purchase a new pump, but when I called American Pump, they suggested that I let them come out for a service call and take a look at it. Well, to my surprise, I was told my the Owner, Michael Logsdon, that I did not need to spend the money on a new pump that mine could be repaired. They took my pump with them and within a few days it was back and running like normal. This company could have easily sold me a new pump. It is refreshing to see that there is honesty in business. I will be using American Pump again if I need service on the other items that may need attention, such as my sprinkler pump or house water pump.
