The drywall problem began with, what I thought was a faulty garage door. One Sunday afternoon my father drove me home, (I am blind). As he drove the car out of the garage, he attempted to close the door; it would not go all the way down. He oiled the mechanism, tried to close it several more times, gave up and told me to call a garage door repairman. I found Taylor Garage Doors on Angie?s List, and Brian Taylor came out to help me solve my door problem. After a few minutes of looking at the door, he informed me that the door itself was working fine; the drywall in the garage ceiling was coming down. He put up a temporary fix, and advised me to get a specialist to look at it. He asked if I had anyone in mind. I said I did not, so he recommended his neighbor, Rick Porter, who had just branched out into his own business. I placed a call to Mr. Porter, and he came out that very afternoon to look at the ceiling drywall. He stated that instead of using drywall screws, nails had been used. He also stated that they did not even use the proper number of nails. They placed them about two feet apart. He stated that screws should be used. He agreed to call my father and describe the deplorable ceiling condition, something I could not effectively describe. He agreed to give me an estimate, which he emailed the next day. He was very up front in his estimate, stating that the dry wall was inexpensive, and what would really cost would be the labor. He said that for the integrity of the ceiling it would e better to rip the damaged drywall out and totally replace it. So he arrived promptly at eight a.m. on a Friday and went to work. Over the next two days he ripped out the three sheets of drywall, replaced them with new dry wall, using screws every six inches apart on the seams and every eight inches in the field. He then taped and mudded all of the joints, and then had a spray rig come and texture the ceiling to match the rest of the garage. He then cleaned the garage. My father said, when he inspected the work, the ceiling looked beautiful, and the garage floor and surrounding area looked pristine. Mr. Porterhad stated he did not want his payment until someone sighted inspected handiwork. I thought that was wonderful that he did not want to take advantage of my disability. I believe he is a great worker, an ethical person who takes pride in a job well done. Would I call on him again for repairs and improvements both inside and outside my home? Yes, in a heartbeat. Through our conversation I learned that he was skilled in electronics. I will have to utilize his expertise in this area also, and write another report for the list.
