Alumni A/C & Heating

The technician, Hugh Smith, told me I needed to replace my HVAC unit at a cost of $3,910 when it turned out I didn?t.  

I have home warranty coverage on the appliances in my home.  The warranty company sent Almuni AC to my door after the AC part of the unit wasn?t working. This 1 ton unit that contains both heating and AC is in a location that I am unable to see given I am in a wheelchair.  Hugh told me the unit was a ?ball of rust? and needed to be replaced.  Therefore I wrote him a $1,000 check as a down payment for replacement.  After he left I got to thinking that the units are usually made of copper that shouldn?t be a ball of rust.  Therefore I called my bank and they put a stop hold on the check.  I also called a different HVAC company and they stopped out a couple hours after Hugh left.  This other HVAC company looked at the unit and identified the real issue was simply with the thermostat.  They replaced the thermostat with an upgraded version that has a remote control for my needs at a cost of only $300.  The unit has been working great since.  There was no need to replace the overall unit at a cost of $3,910.  I called my home warranty company after all of this and they said they would work at removing Alumni AC from their recommendation list.
