We sat down and discussed the price of installation of my already purchased exhaust fan. (In fact, I had three different choices since I was not sure on what would be needed). This is where the surprises started. When I purchased the service plan ($88.48 for $279.00 of services), there was no mention anywhere about a service charge, the other item that was very disturbing was the fact that among the services described in the deal was the installation of a bathroom exhaust fan. In my mind, I clearly had the understanding that the amount of service would cover that exhaust fan installation.
When (Steve) the technician looked in his service book, every task possible had a price for service. That way the customer could be assured on exactly the cost of service. He clearly explained that in detail with me before he started the work. It was at that moment that he also told me about the ($59.00) service charge. Let me make this as clear as possible; no where on the description or during the appointment setup was there a discussion about a service charge. Even when the technician took the lowest possible job description for this particular service, and adding on the service charge, he explained to me I still owed a total of $71.00 on top of the amount I already prepaid. I despise expecting something was already paid for and then finding out there are "hidden charges".
After some discussion, and talking, we both agreed that the description of service should have been worded better and should say something to the extent of "this service may or may not cover all of the service requested" There should also be a mention of the service charge and amount. I will give Steve some thanks, he was allowed to lower the service charge by $20.00 after calling in to his supervisor and explaining my concerns. The bottom line was that I still paid $88.48 plus $51.00 to get the service . So in essence, the fan was $50.00 and the service for installation was $139.48. That just doesn't make a whole lot of sense.
Luckily, I purchased three different fans and one ended up working without any additional vent work. It just happened that my house had vertical venting, while two of the three had fans that had side venting. I did not want any more additional charges that would include some vent work.
He installed the fan and told me every step including emphasizing the importance of a good ground since the one he removed was not properly grounded. He was very careful and had covering on the floor to protect the work area.
I am satisfied with the new exhaust fan. I just do not like surprises and unexpected charges.
The quality of the work was good with the exception of some wall damage where a switch box needed to be extended. The hole left after the work was done was larger than the switch plate. The tech's were not equipped to deal with wall damage, so I was left to do the repairs. I am handy, so I could do the repairs. If that was not the case, I would have had to hire someone else to repair the wall. The rest of the work was fine.
I was surprised by the price, but Mr. Sparky did everything turn-key (i.e. they provided everything). I could have saved money if I purchased some of the components myself. If you use them and know what you want done, go to Home Depot and get the parts yourself to avoid the mark-up. That's where they went to get the parts that they didn't have anyway.
The tech's wore shoe covers, cleaned up and took all the garbage with them. They were professional and I believe the work they did was of good quality.
I showed the inspection report to the electrician highlighting the 4 problem needing resolution. He gave me an estimate of $1310.00 (after a 10% Angie's List Discount). No time estimates were included. As a highly regarded Angie's list supplier and anticipating that the work was extensive, I signed the agreement thinking that the price was rather high. I notified them of my concerns.
After discussions with Mister Sparky's management, they informed me that an error in the estimate was, in fact, made and they quickly refunded half of my original payment.
Thanks
