Working with Mr. Avery was an excellent experience. Having limited experience with catamarans, I asked if I could follow him around as a learning experience. He immediately began explaining not only what he was doing, but why he was doing it. He covered probable causes of each deficiency, all the possible solution (with pros and cons), and how to prevent the problem from recurring. On the more mundane maintenance items, like rebedding items to the deck, he would show me on one and have me do the next with any necessary coaching. As we moved around the boat, I would ask unrelated questions about other systems. He would give me brief classes and point me to more thorough explanations and resources. His easy interpersonal style and professional workmanship made the day more valuable than simply finishing the work list. I don't know what standard rate is in Key West, but I will happily pay for Mr. Avery's craftmanship, work ethic, and style the next time I need work done on my boat (and there is always something else that has to be done on a boat).
Description of Work
In response to deficiencies found on a pre-purchase marine survey on my 34' catamaran, Mr. Avery installed backing plates and reseated the center stay, the anchor cleat, and headstay. To do this he personally manufactured the plates specifically to match each location. The bulkhead in the salon had suffered water damage and the plywood was beginning to separate under the anchor points for the starboard shrouds. He dismantled the doorframe, inspected all of the anchor points for the chain plates, and then repaired the bulkhead and reassembled the framing. To prevent further damage to that section of the bulkhead, he reseated all three of the anchor points above it. The front rail had been bent in a dock collision just before I purchased the boat. One stanchion had been pulled out of the deck. Mr. Avery developed an oak framing device to straighten the post and adjust the top rail to eliminate the need to remove and rebuild the entire rail.

My business does not say no. If a job requires expertise not in my repertoire, I have a large field of professionals who I use to achieve the end results wanted. i.e. I can design and felicitate the making of metal hardware much of which I actually produce. However there are welding & machine shop services I use.
