The day after I filled out the online application I was contacted by a loan officer. The officer explained that his assistant would send me a checklist of supporting documentation that was needed and that after they had reviewed everything, would contact me to discuss mortgage products. Even though they had a secure online application, they had no secure way for me to submit my supporting documentation online. They suggested using un-encrypted email or fax. Since I do not have access to a fax machine, I drove the documentation to their office. A week after dropping off my documentation (and not having heard anything from either the assistant or the loan officer), I called the office and spoke with the assistant. I asked when I would hear from the loan officer and she said that my application looked great. She confirmed that I was looking for a prequalification, sent me some rate quotes, and that was it. At this point, I decided not to do business with them and notified them through email. I don't think they really wanted to do business with me, as they could have been more proactive. As a first-time homebuyer, I felt like I was in the dark. I have since gotten some books on how to buy a home and now know that what I need is a letter of pre-approval, not a pre-qualification. First-time homebuyers are better off looking elsewhere for a mortgage.
