The manager of the condominium, Marc El Hassan, hired his brother Andrew El Hassan to replace the roof. After the workers removed the old roof, they covered it with a tarp. Rain was forecast that night and Andrew assured us that we would be safe and dry. It began to rain about 10 p.m. When I went up to bed at 11 p.m., I discovered an 8 foot puddle, 2 inches deep in our upstairs bedroom. The ceiling in the bedroom and closet was soaked and the sheetrock was falling in, with rain pouring in. A few minutes later, the water soaked through the hardwood floors into the kitchen below and that ceiling fell in and puddles formed on that hardwood floor. Altogether, six units in different parts of the building were badly damaged. I immediately sent emails to both brothers and called their cell phone numbers. We didn't hear from either of them until late the following night when I called Andrew to tell him it was raining again -- and inside our unit -- and he answered the phone. Andrew told me then that his workers had left a part of the roof uncovered -- the part over our unit and two others. He never sent anything in writing, so I have no proof, but he did tell me that. And since that meant he was responsible, I expected him to take responsibility for the repairs. Even if he hadn't left part of the roof uncovered, he was responsible for keeping our property dry. That's what responsible, competent roofers do. His workers finished replacing the roof in approximately a week. Then, he disappeared. Our manager, Marc El Hassan, told us that the damage was an act of God and his brother wasn't responsible. Our condo association would pay for some repairs (with the dues we had paid over the years) but we were responsible for most of them. Because of the cost of the repairs, our homeowners' insurance dropped us, and we were left to pay for the majority of the repairs, which were very expensive. I will never understand how someone who knew he had left a roof uncovered before a storm and caused so much damage could just walk away and leave the work and expenses of repairs for the victims of his incompetence or carelessness. But Andrew El Hassan did. Please don't give him the chance to do that to you. He needs to find another field of work.
