We employed Larry's garden after listening to him on the local radio station for several years. Our only regret is that we did not hire him years ago. We have replaced our lawn 3 times, about an acre of grass, only to lose most of the beautiful grass due to improper "follow-up".
Larry's Garden is the follow-up we needed and he is always happy to help with any questions on how and why.
His amazing fund of knowledge has saved our yard....finally.
It's beautiful.
Well worth every cent from the initial grass removal/replacement which cost several thousand dollars. I'm o.k. with the money spent because I am confident that we will never have to spends thousands again putting in a new lawn. He supports the customer after the service, sends out dirt, grass root samples to the University of Florida's lab for diagnosis. Then applies the proper treatment. Our lawn is strong now and is able to fight off most "attacks" of lawn killers.
THANK YOU LARRY!!!!

It did not go well. I had spoken to Larry O'Neil in person several times at home and garden shows, as well as listening to him on the radio/TV. After two years, I felt he was a reputable business; I trusted him.
When the sod arrived; it was tossed into the back of a truck & trailer. Honestly, it looked like it might be leftovers from other jobs, especially since they arrived without calling. Many of the sod pieces were brown and dry. but I was told it would green up when watered. They did come back and replace some that never greened up, but not others. I had to ask to have the sod "rolled" to help the roots make good contact with soil; they did come roll it. BTW: rolling sod for good soil contact is basic landscape according three other landscapers.
I had carefully listen to Mr. O'Neil give advise and recommendations of this zoysia variety on his weekly radio show. Despite caring for the sod as instructed, much never rooted and can still be easily pulled up. Most of my yard (about 1/2) was brown and looked dead this spring/summer. I called and actually got Larry when he answered the phone. I explained the problem and asked what it would cost to have someone come out to look at it and advise on how to save it! He told me he had another appointment in the area that evening and would stop by. It would cost $100. I agreed, even though I thought he should stand behind his product and installation. He never called, he never showed up. Fortunately, my brother in law was a landscaper in south FL for 35 yrs before selling business and retiring. I sent photos to him. He is not familiar with new zoysia variety, but talked to a friend/former competitor still in business; he passed along the advise from his friend (who had only used my variety once). The original sod is still dead/dying, but it is spreading like crazy into the flower beds. The new areas look good, so I am going to try to transplant some into the old/dead areas.
He talks on the radio about going out to check up on his other zoysia ultimate flora customers (my variety) and how great and lush their yards look. Sure wish I had been as lucky to have him come out to check on mine.
He may be a reputable and reliable landscaper and it may be my "job" was just an anomaly. But, I am to report an accurate and true evaluation based on my firsthand experience. This was/is my experience.

From start to finish, it was a disaster. As required by ordinance, LG had a company come out and mark my lawn where power lines, water lines and cable tv lines were located. On the very first day of removal of my existing landscaping, LG's men, driving a backhoe, cut through my cable tv/computer/telephone line. Then, to try to hide the damage, they tried to splice the wire back together. A definite no-no. But that was just the first time they cut this cable. A couple of weeks later, they cut it a second time, after my cable company had repaired the first cut. That same backhoe also cut the main water supply line to my home, flooding my yard. When they repaired it, they failed to turn the water pressure back up, so I had very low water pressure until I had to ask them to turn it back up. They used a stump grinder to remove several tree stumps in my yard. The operator of the stump grinder knocked into a hose bib, causing a breakage in between the inside and outside walls of my home, flooding one of my bathrooms. Fortunately, I was walking by the room as it was flooding, just in time to save my wood floors. I could go on and on with other problems, but I think you get my point. I warn anyone who employs this company..........look out!! Save yourself the agony that I had to endure. In retrospect, I should had performed better due diligence on this company. If I had, I wouldn't have hired them. LG is proud to advertise that he doesn't sub-contract any work......all workers are employees of his company. I should have sub-contracted the work to companies who specialize in land clearing, irrigation systems, installing pavers, and landscape architecture Almost weekly, I have had to repair my irrigation system, for example. Why?......Because the employee of LG forgot to use glue in many of the connections, if you can believe it!. Updated 10/2/24 Now, two years later, I am still discovering leaks where the connections were incorrectly attached. Finally, without this becoming a book, some of the expensive plants they installed have died, because they were inappropriate for the Jax climate. I only discovered this after researching them on the Internet. Why would a landscaper install plants that he knew wouldn't survive the summer heat in Jax? Incompetence is the only answer I can come up with. Use this company at your own peril.

Larry himself is very knowledgeable about landscaping in general. The crews were always polite, but it was very hard to predict when they would arrive and what their timeline was. As weather impacted the project, we never knew if or when they would show up. I would call to get updates and it was difficult to get a return call. Now a year later, I am calling about part of the work that was warrantied, and once again, I can't get a call back. Would not recommend.

Larry provided a drawing of the new front along with a proposal including some options. Once we agreed, he scheduled the work. First, all existing lawn and shrubs were removed. Then there was a period of weed control before planting began. During this time, pavers were installed. All work was guarenteed for a year and we had no issues getting replacement shrubs for ones that didn't make it.

The overall experience of LARRY"S GARDEN is a continuing nightmare of weeds.. I shall make known other details as to Larry's behavior.
Example: Using my extra land as a dump site. With a promise that it would cut the cost due to the fact that the cost of moving the old sod to an dump site he had to pay to dump at was a considerable cost to him per year to the tune of $40,000. Then telling he-when it came time to make out the final bill--that it cost more for his men to wheel is less then 20 yards to the vacant lot next to my land , that I own. Plus he said when , when I discovered the extra cost ----" that removing the acorns was a problem". What---$3000+ to remove acorns. from a lawn not much bigger then a tennis court.
So please remember my e mail address [email protected] The famous John Galt of ATLAS Shrugged.
PS: Anyone knowing Larry---pass this on to him. He knows my number.
Larry's grade is an lower then an F. But Angie's list goes no lower.
It ain't over until the fat lady sings.

Communication has been very poor. Follow up after being paid has been marginal.

The crew was very nice, hard workers. They weeded and removed the grass along my fence for a future planting area and dug out the two trees. The willow was planted and tied in position with twine that dug into the bark of the tree. I have had to completely redo this using tubing to protect the tree. Five azaleas have died and will need to be replaced. The trees in my front yard that I asked to be removed, were cut off at ground level and the roots left. I dug the roots out myself, as Mr. O'Neil said he would have to charge me more for him to remove the roots.
