Jim and his staff were very responsive. Although not a great way to spend money, the price was reasonable and services were performed as expected.

When there was a recent issue with the pump they were already in the area so they stopped by and fixed it.....free of charge.

I strongly recommend J. L. Smith Septic Tank Services. Jim and his whole team did exceptional work for me. From the initial estimate and tank replacement through final inspection and installing sod, Jim's whole team was timely, responsive, and professional. While my septic tank replacement was less complex than some, J. L. Smith Septic Tank Services still had to work around sprinkler lines, residential water lines, trees, power service, and my busy calendar. It was clear the crew worked together for years because they asked good questions and did everything right the first time. Jim's team made it easy for the Health Department to complete their inspection which resulted in an immediate approval to close out the permit. J. L. Smith Septic Tank Services did exactly what they said they would do; on-schedule, on-budget, and exceeded my expectations for professional workmanship.

It wasn't perfectly smooth, but it was good service. They were competitive and they were good. The clean-up wasn't what i thought it would be.

Excellent.  I had obtained two other quotes.  J. L. Smith had the best price and the highest level of professionalism.  The owner came out and did the quote himself.  I did not have to ask any questions.  He provided a full explanation of what was required for the job.  He was the only contractor I contacted that did a thorough examination of the project.  The other two companies just walked around and said you might need this or you might need that.  He knew exactly what needed to be done for the project.  The other contractors indicated they would not be responsible for damage to existing pipes, sprinkler systems, etc.  J.L. Smith said they would repair any damage but it was not needed.  They were very cautious and I can't say this enough - they were excellent.  This company also provided re-sodding service for an extra cost.  The price was reasonable and we opted for them to re-sod.  It was high quality sod and it is doing great.  The entire staff was very professional.  I rarely make recommendations to others but in this case, I have already been recommending this company.  Once again, if I had to sum up this company in one word, it would be excellent.  I just wish I could find a remodeling company that was as good as J. L. Smith.  

We needed a new septic field.  J.L. Smith was highly reviewed on Angie's List.  They took care of the necessary permits and did a good job.  Would use them again and recommend them to others.  Dug a new field, put in a dosing tank and installed the necessary electric wiring. They answered all questions, and explained the process well.

The price was the best. They came right away, did the job, and handled permitting, inspection, and everything. It was good as it can be.

We had three companies come out to provide quotes for the drain field replacement.  Of the 3, J.L. Smith was the only company to dig into the field to see exactly why the system was failing.  Once the failure cause was identified, they provided a comprehensive quote including the cost of permitting.  J.L. Smith's quote was roughly 20% lower than the other two bids.
J.L. Smith, pulled the permit and scheduled the repair.  Repairs were completed on schedule and at the quoted cost.  Work was even performed during a steady drizzling rain.
Highly recommended when it comes to drain field replacement.

After having the septic tank pum[ped and inspected by another company, the inspection found that the drain field had become discommmected and clogged and had to be replaced.  That company referred us to JL SMith as being best equipped to handle the work.  As we were in the process of selling the house, time was critical in getting things done.  J L Smith provided a prompt estimate and the permitting process was initiated.  JL Smith handled the submissions to the Duval Health Department.  When the health department issued the permit it included additional requirements that went well beyone the initial estimate.  JL Smith worked hard to mitigate the increased cost of the additionalrequirements were successful in mitigating most of the increased work content.  Once the permit was issued and we had the final quote the contract was signed and work commenced.  They worked very quickly on what sounded like a major undertaking.  They had the prpoper equipment and people and handled the entire effort in a matter of days.  When they finished the work, we as the seller, and the buyer were very happy with the final product, and the Health Department issued a satisfactory approval of the installed drain field.  The closing went as scheduled.  JL SMith was very prompt and professional in every phase of this project, and the results were outstanding.

I was advised during septic tank pump out that I needed a new tank and drain field,as current field was failing.I obtained several estimates and decided on J.L.Smith based on the Angie's List reviews.Their price was competetive and the initial contact with the office seemed positive.Mr.Smith came out the next day,advised me of my options and we agreed on a course of action and the cost.
Then the delays began.They had scheduling problems;the permitting process was delayed by the county;several days of rain further delayed the start.It was almost 6 weeks from initial contact under the first ground was broken.Not all the delays were under the control of Smith,and they did keep in touch during this period.
The first installation did not pass inspection.Although we could use the system in the meantime,they had to return to redo some of the work in order to pass the county inspection.In Smith's defense,the County Health Inspectors in this county are notorious for not overlooking the slightest detail.Good for the consumer,but a potential cause for delay.
Smith's employees were friendly and efficient.The only caveat I might add is that when choosing to sod the mound of the drain field,which I did,be clear as to the type of sod being installed.The sod I agreed to was not what I envisioned when I ordered it.He assured me that was what I had ordered.Maybe some research on my part would have ensured my satisfaction.It wasn't terrible,just not what I thought I would be getting.

Joined Angie's List to ensure I hired a reliable company for replacement of our Home Septic tank Drain Field. Initially contacted another Company from Angie's list that was rated "A" because they had pumped out our Septic tank in February of 2012 and had indicated that we would get a certain discount if we used them for our repair problem. However when I contacted this other company I was quite disappointed that the office people did not recognize such a discount and indicated the lady that I had discussed this with and whom had sent me this offer in writing was no longer with them. Furthermore, the lady I did speak with indicated that  when our tank was pumped in February, the worker indicated that our tank was in bad shape & that we would need a whole new system. I questioned this since their Employee had not even exposed our tank to make such a judgement. As the conversation proceeded I was quoted the Permitting Fee ( which was $100.00 more than that required by J.L. Smith  ) and a range for the repair anywhere from $6,000 up. I told them I would call back & called but instead called the other company rated "A"  J.L. Smith Septic tank Services . From the start, they were helpful & reliable. Their Office Manager Amy explained the permitting process & the cost was $750.00 which was less than the other company. Their employee Joe came out the very next day and measured & inspected out system. He explained that he felt that we needed a new drain field but that unless the Health Department required something more, he did not think the tank was a problem. They did warn us that the permitting and inspection process was a bit more time consuming in St. Johns County & having custom built our home we were aware of this issue. Through out the process Amy kept us informed of their progress & on July 3, 2013 the St. Johns County Health Department finally came by to for their initial measurements & perk test. The Health Inspector told us we could expect her decision on the permitting by the end of the next week ! Sure enough, on July 12th, Amy called to let me know that the permit  had been received and that all that was required was a new drain field. The price was quoted by Amy as $3,800.00 which was very reasonable especially since we were putting in a larger drain field ( 3500 sq. ft)  . We scheduled Jim to come out the next day for final measurements based on the permit  & he explained everything in detail to us . We then scheduled the work to be done the next Tuesday.  The next Tuesday Jim & Joe came, were careful not to destroy the yard and installed the new drain field and even did some repairs to the tank by cutting a new concrete cover and fixing the pipe connection for no additional fee. The inspector came out and passed the work without incident . They would not give J.L. Smith Septic a specific time when they would do the inspection but Amy had asked them to call Jim so he could meet them here but of course they did not do that but it passed so there was no need for him to be here he just prefers to be in case there are any problems. Jim & his team came back yesterday & closed the job and cleaned up the area & leveled the ground as promised. All& all this has been a great experience, it took allot longer than expected but the delays were a combination of St Johns County dragging their feet, some rain, and J.L. Smith's backed up schedule. They have a small team, do all the work themselves & work long & hard hours. I would definitely recommend them to anyone.

This was more 'specialiazed' work than Tillmans could do once they found problem. Tillmans had mr smith of jl smith call. Very prompt call back . Upon checking collapse he told me the could repair top because sides were good!! Good news. Came out with backhoe and muscle and fixed. Also replaced irrigation lines they had to cut thru, replanted my bushes and then graded the yard back!! Extremely neat! Mr smith is the nicest man, answered questions, explained everything. I'm more than pleased.
I wouldn't have known if the said it all needed replacing!
