Our little Quaker parrot was treated with loving care and has been in all the 15 years we have been taking her here. They know she is the nervous type and always give her extra love to try to keep her calm. They have also boarded her in the past as well as performed all her physicals. We love the atmosphere, the cleanliness, and their obvious love for birds! Dr. Knight is especially gentle and even remembers Max from when she was a baby. (By the way, Max we thought was a he until SHE laid and egg 2 years ago!)
They were VERY sympathetic initially, particulary the bird caretaker, Donna, who indulged me over the next 24 hours with calling her as many times as I wanted to check on Button's status. I will say that the overall price for emergency care and the overnight and meds was reasonable, but I did not like the feeling of being and quot;gougedand quot; price wise to a higher probable vet bill by a FIVE DAY visit.
I have brought in my birds before, but will not pay $194 for one exam on one bird. I have three birds. Not affordable.. I would certainly be inclined to take my birds there more often if it didn't cost me a small fortune each time for basic care, despite the 30 mile drive from St. Augustine to Jacksonville. I also noted that in addition to a $50 exam fee, I could have been charged $50 for emergency APPOINTMENT which thankfully, this time was waived. A person or bird in distress should not have to worry about extra costs in times of duress. It's not a good business practice. I felt the antibiotics were excessive in price too -- two of them at over $20 each ... but I do appreciate the hands on show and tell of how to give Buttons his injections at home.
I can get another quality avian vet now to see my cockatiels for only $50 / visit plus lab work, but it's not even close to the $194 bill required at EBH. For avian pet owners to use their services more effectively lowered prices would be advised.
However, I'm absolutely happy with the service, the extreme care of my bird AND me the owner -- and very focused know how on caring for the bird's immediate, emergency need.
You never want to have to call the vet in an emergency, but it is nice to know you can if needed. I've had to call them a couple of times and they squeezed me in (if during office hours) or they met me at the bird hospital after hours and on a weekend, if needed. And in the case of traumatic injury, your pet needs help right away. They were able to save my bird after he was attacked by another animal. I'm forever grateful for the care they have given my feathered (and furry) family.
