I spoke with a "Marty" on my first call to "(Un)Affordable Fencing" who informed me that he was the "owner".When I asked for an estimate to replace a section of my fence, he gave me a seemingly reasonable figure, but also stated that there was no charge to receive an on site estimate. This was to be just the first of several lies (too numerous to mention all) that this man told. He said, for instance, that he used 1/2" board and that his was the only company that used pressure-treated lumber in their fencing. I believed him, only to learn later that this too is a lie. He is a very smooth talker (when he is making the prospective sale) and I bought into his BS.This was a Friday afternoon and I agreed to have him do the work, if the onsite charge was at least close to his phone estimate. I also told him that there is a problem with my 2 small dogs-they like to dig holes next to the fence. He suggested that one solution might be to dig a trench along the fence line, nail a roll of chicken wire to the bottom of the fence and then cover it up. He would have his installer consider this idea and if feasible, the charge would be an additional $125. I agreed. The next morning, his installer (literally) banged on my front door around 9:00. He measured the old fence and showed me that I had under measured by 10'. He quoted me an increased charge, which was reasonable. This character, Jerry?, then suggested that rather than nail wire to the fence, he would just dig a 6" trench and nail lumber across the bottom. I would only incur a small additional charge for the extra lumber. I agreed. He and his helper then left to get the material and I left for a meeting. When I returned after lunch, he was just beginning to put the new fence in place. When I tried to ask him a few questions, he ignored me and had a very sullen attitude (I have had some experience with Manic/Depressive, i.e., Bi Polar, individuals and this malcontent certainly fit the profile.) He finished erecting the fence then cut the boards with his power saw and placed them against the fence bottom. "Jerry" then managed to convince me (I felt stupid afterward) that they did not need to be nailed because as the dogs dug the holes, the boards would simply just keep dropping down into the holes. I agreed to give this a try, as he promised to come back later and nail them if necessary. Soon after, he gave me the bill. When I asked why the charge of $125 when there was no trench and no wire, he mumbled something about "walking around the yard with the customer". I should not have paid it, but I did. The crew left and I called "Marty". He mumbled a similar excuse, while telling me that most companies "charge $175 for the same thing"-another lie. There is no such charge elsewhere. "Marty" promised to call "Jerry" and have him call me. Latter never called. Over the next 4 weeks, I spoke with "Marty" at least 6-8 times. Not only did I want the $125 back, I also wanted the installer to return and secure the boards and remove some debris that he left in my yard.
Each time, "Marty" was polite and gave me the same nonsense about having "Jerry" call me "immediately". The latter never did call (surprise, surprise). Finally, I told "the owner" that I no longer expected that the job would be finished and that I would just
like for him to return the $125 that I had overpaid. At that point, he began screaming at me that he had to pay the installer a
"commission" (Is this in addition to the installer's fee and what does that have to do with the fact that it was a previously undisclosed add on "fee"?). He then hung up. Other victims have revealed unfortunate experiences with this company and the negatives have one theme in common. This man is a liar and will say whatever it takes to get the sale-the customer be damned. I just wish that I had reviewed his website and Angie's List before hiring this jerk. Obviously, I would have gone elsewhere. Caveat Emptor
