David Killian visited my house on time, looked over the job, measured the roof area, discussed the options and gave me a proposal for labor and materials. It was the 4th proposal I had received and one of the least expensive. I appreciated his explanation of the entire process; when to expect each step, how long it would take and the various options for design and materials. I felt his presentation was the best of the four I had received so we soon came to an agreement.
Before the work began we had a two day rain delay during which the dumpster and materials were delivered. Removal of the old roof and replacement with new underlay and shingles took exactly two days with his crew working from about 8AM until dark (around 7PM). All went smoothly. The crew members were all hard workers and pleasant to be around.
The crew did a fine job of cleaning up the mess after the installation was finished. Then David came back a day later and used a magnet to pick up any stray nails or other metal debris his crew had missed.
The only downside to the process was the noise generated by removal of the old roof and installation of the new one, but there is no way I know of to avoid noise when you replace your roof.
We are very happy with our new roof and recommend DS Killian Roof and Construction Co.

Response from DS Killian Roof & General Contractors Inc

"[removed member name], I would like to first apologize for your inconvenience and explain why you were not called back. We began relocation of our current office & updating all of our aged computer & phone systems the week of May 8Th.Our office has just got back on-line yesterday. Unfortunately all of our accounting, phone, & email software and data base were located on a server that was damaged during the move. We also are having a problem porting our main phone number 246 ROOF to a new phone service provider. Fortunately all of our past customers had access to our cellular phone numbers, most of which were unaffected during the move. Please give us an opportunity to help you and call me on my personal cell number 904 509 8470. I again apologize for your inconvenience and I will personally make sure you are provided excellent service, if you give us another opportunity-Enjoy the rest of your day and weekend. David S. I called this company to have my roof repaired. When I talked to the owner he essentially made me feel like my work wasn't worth his time. He made it seem that my project was too small and that he only works for the larger projects. He called back later and said that he would have a guy in my area the next day and that he would let me know when to expect his guy. I never got a call back and the guy never showed up. I called back to see why no one came and he said that someone would be out the next day. No one came again. I called back a third time and owner said he would do it himself and scheduled for the following week…he never showed up either. I called maybe five more times to find out why he didn’t come but he never returned any of my phone calls. I hired someone else in the interim to fix my roof and they did a great job. Two weeks later the owner called back asking if I still needed his services. I didn’t bother contacting him back.

They did a great job. They cleaned up and did not leave any debris behind. He was pleasant to work with and he brought all the permits. He followed up as well. They did the work quickly, timely, and professionally.

The wire cloth and damper for my kitchen vent needed to be replaced.  What I didn't realize is that these vents are all rather unique based on the kitchen cabinetry, location of vent in the wall, etc. so you can't just DIY with parts from the hardware store so I hired a contractor to do the job.    David Killian came over and scoped out the job himself.  He fabricated the new damper and sent over Bob to do the installation within a couple of days.  Bob had to make some further modifications to get it to fit the venting perfectly and also installed new wire cloth.  I am very pleased with the job.

My home was power washed.  Areas around a window frame were replaced, painted and sealed.  It took a couple of trips to finish checking and sealing around all the windows and doors due to weather interruptions, but their guy called me to keep me posted on when they would be back to finish the job. During the sale of the home an inspector noted some other fine lines of crack in the stucco, indicated it was not a big concern, but I called Killian and they cheerfully came back out and addressed that issue.  I rated them well on this job because I think it is very important to have that kind of post-sale follow up which I experienced with them.  They do quality work and come back, if needed.

First I'm no longer a member of Angie's List because of my experience with "The Big Deal" -- I purchased the $149 Roof Maintenance Package! June 27, 2012.   On July 16, 2012, 19 days later, I receive an email (addressed to me and three other homeowners) from DS Killian Roofing stating that my roof maintenance was scheduled for July 24, 2012 and that they would e contacting you soon.  Eight days later, July 24, 2012, I sent them a message requesting to know when they would be doing my roof maintenance (now 27 days since purchasing "The Big Deal").  On August 1, 2012 (now 38 days since purchase), I received another email (address to me and five others) from DS Killian Roofing stating that due to heavy rain we were not able to keep a structured schedule and that they have doubled their man power and going to get to your roof soon (who's roof there are now six of us waiting)..  in all the message they stated if you have ANY questions please Email me at [email protected] (not the officer manager Tiffany Fowler).  No more emails were received and no phone calls where received.  I finally called them the week of September 24, 2012, over 90 days since purchasing the $149.00 Roof Maintenance Package stating that I was going to contact my credit card company to reverse the charges and report them to Better Business Bureau.  I finally got a call from DS Killian Roofing on Friday night September 28, 2012.  The gentlemen was calling to apologize but didn't have any answers.  Didn't know if my roof was schedule, had been completed, or what was going on.   I reacted badly to his lack of information and question him why he would call me without knowing what was going on.   After a heated exchange we ended the call, later that evening around 11pm I receive my inspection report via email.  The rood inspection was conducted August 2, 2012. No appointment was setup, and no one called to inform me they would be inspecting my roof.
Only positive comment I have to give is the report was very detailed.
Based on my experience or should I say ordeal, I can only give them high marks on price and quality, that being said I have quantitatively rating them 2.6 out of 5 (rounding it to a "C" grade).   I hope DS Killian and others that offer discounts understand the response they will receive and how to better prepare for the onslaught.  How hard is to communicate with your customers, use a calendar, and schedule accurately your inspections.  Customers will understand better if you call them and reschedule due to emergency roofing issues. A $3,000 roof job takes precedence over prepaid $149 discount roof inspection.  I definitely learned my lesson.

Very well.  This is an 8-unit two-story condo in Ponte Vedra.  Killian worked with me to get approval from the ARB, including provided the correct insurance and evidence of materials.  He offered a competitive price, less than the last condo that was done with the same materials.   He  timely started and completed the project.   In the interim, while waiting on insurances and approvals, Killian patched for free an area that may have been contributing to a leak into one of the condos. One leak occurred while Killian was working, and he worked with the unit owner to repair the ceiling to their satisfaction. Killian also noted the need for repair or replacement of chimney caps and gave us a price on those.  Other chimney repair places I've contacted have requested an inspection fee just to give us a bid. Killian timely gave us a wind mit report which was used to reduce our insurance rates.  Wonderful!!

I have reviewed Killian in relation to other rentals, but this was the first which got me started with him.
This was a two-story house that we wanted to get ready to rent. It was in a subdivision that required permission to do the roof.  He worked well in that environment, handled the permitting easily, kept the dumpster and area clean.  Worked fast and finished the job in a couple days.
He did not require me to meet him to get the bid, which saved time, whereas some roofers like to make you meet them so they can try to talk you into using them.
The slope was greater than originally estimated, and he did not charge extra for that.
He noticed something needed work and did it and told me how much it cost and that it was optional whether I wanted to pay it or not.  Just an honest guy.
He also noticed my chimney needed repair, quoted me a price, and returned and did that work.

Excellent.
1.  Price.  The owner of DS Killian, Dave, priced the home and was within a few hundred of the lowest bids.
2.  Time.  He did not waste my time by making me meet him out there (it is a rental) but was able to handle all by phone.  I could have met him if I wanted.  He timely completed the work and timely sent the wind mit form.
3.  Extras.  Because this house was originally shingled, Dave bid it that way, and when they found the slope of the roof actually required a different roofing per new code, they installed that roof (which is slightly more) at no additional charge.  Unfortunately, the wind mit no longer did me any good b/c insurers don't like modified bitumen, but that's the change in code not Killian's fault!
Also, they advised me of trees that were potential problems, cut back trees as necessary to work at no extra charge (so I could have my tree guy come do a bigger job at lesser price), and cleaned up after themselves.  Did all without incurring complaints from renters.
Please know that Killian is good and hence very busy, so don't expect to talk to someone that is sitting on his butt and can answer your phone call and send you an e-mail within minutes; he is the real deal in the field.  He has called me back at 6 and 7 at night.  He is a hard-worker.

The inspection took  place when no one was home, since it was roof work  in order to tell if there was someone up on the roof or not you would have to been there.  All i had to go by was the company flyer left at the front door.  (My neighbor web cam confirm what happen for the week.)   I call and of course they confirm that they came out to perform the inspection and that they would be emailing  details of there findings and possible estimate of what it would cost.   A few weeks after the inspection it rain and I still had not receive word on what was needed to repair my roof.  I ask if someone would come out they did and for an additional 100 dollars they put something  around my roof vent tubes to keep the water from leaking into the house. I purchase the deal in June 2012 for 149. the additional 100 was paid for in Aug 2012.  Although this is a considerable savings for Angies list customers (249.00). I went into this knowing that my house is needing a roof and that I would get and estimate on the cost of that roof.  End result as of JANUARY 2013 LEAKY ROOF AND NO ESTIMATE FOR REPAIR OR REPLACE.

We purchased the "Big Deal" on June 27th. After a few ignored phone and email messages, and a missed appointment from which my husband took off work and spent the day waiting around, Dave Killian and his team finally came out on the evening of August 1st, just as it was beginning to get dark. After they performed the roof maintenance, Mr. Killian said the 4 rows of shingles around our fireplace needed to be replaced as the shingles were installed incorrectly, and that he would provide us a written roof report and estimate for the fireplace leaks over the next couple of days. After Mr. Killian and his team performed the roof maintenance, we had a "new leak" in our family room. We noticed the leak during the first heavy rainstorm within the week of their visit, as water came streaming down on my head while I was sitting on the sofa. I believe they caused the leak because we had heavy rains just before they came out and there was no problem. After the leak, my husband called Dave and suggested that maybe is team "loosened something" while walking around on our roof. Dave said they didn't do anything, and that maybe a limb or hail (there had been no hail storm) caused the damage. He said that if we let them to the additional work for $1,000 (we still had no written estimate), his guys would "take a look at it" when doing the other job. He suggested my husband climb on the roof and see if a limb hit our roof. After inspecting our own roof we sent the following email:
Dave - Per our conversation yesterday afternoon, as you suggested, I went up on my roof looking for branches or anything that might have caused damage. There were no branches, leaves or anything. No trees overhang or grow near the family room (part of the roof facing the backyard). It stormed all last week (before you all came out) and we had no leak in our family room. However, during the first major storm (within a week) since your team worked on our roof, we have a leak that "streams" water. Maybe you all loosened something while on the roof? We've lived here for two years and we've never had a water leak in our family room. We are still hoping to receive your written estimate for the other repair work in the near future. However, this new problem should be addressed right away to prevent further damage during the coming storms. Let me know when someone will come out to look into this problem.
We received no response to this email. Angie?s List ended up providing us with a refund. Unfortunately, we still had to fix the new leak that we feel Mr. Killian and his team caused. He claimed they didn?t do it, but then he never bothered to come back out and take a look either.

Dave called me back promptly and Emailed me an estimate for our roof. I did not use him immediately as I wanted to wait for hurricane season to be over. When I contacted him a few months later he stood by his original estimate. His crew completed the job in 2 days start to finish and the roof looks beautiful. He also was able to stop the leaks on the screened porch that we had had since it's installation 12 years ago. Overall a good experience.

At first very well--DS Killian & Company was very responsive--called me numerous times to schedule. Sent out a note clarifying what the service I purchased and if that was not the service I wanted, then they would refund. Due to timing and weather--although I signed up for this in june time frame, work was done in August. The person came out and looked over roof and did minor caulking repairs. He also said I needed some boots replaced and was going to give me a quote for that as well as replacing a flat roof. Here is where the wheels came off. They NEVER got back to me. I had to send an email to Mr. Killian himself asking what the status was. I was due two quotes--one for the boots and one for the roof. I got a note back saying he would look into it and that is the last I heard. I have to give them poor marks on responsiveness and overall experience. So in my eyes I paid for this service which is also an opportunity for DS Killian to get more business and yet they did not respond. I am obviously very disappointed but I guess they have more business than they can shake a stick at and dont need to follow through on what they had said they would. With roofers, I look for responsiveness because there are a lot of roofers out there but very few who truly seem to respond to your requests in a timely fashion.(Because when you really need a roofer you really need it and if they dont respond when its a simple non emergency, they will never respond when its an emergency and you need them asap)  DS Killian started very well but fell well short in the end.
