I was lucky to find Mike. However, because of this experience I wish to post a negative review about Angie's list in general because I did not find Mike through Angie's list. After weeks of horrible experiences with Angie's list I gave up and called a local property manager that I know from previous experience and asked him if he had anyone who he uses for his roofs, and he gave me Mike's number. First in this review I wish to show you all the bad experiences I had with Angie's list companies, then I'll tell you how great Mike Boucher was. This was a very complicated roofing project because in addition to a standard roof replace, I had a carport that was enclosed to be a part of the house, and the carport had a flat roof that I wanted to be fixed to resolve the lack of insulation that was making the room so hot, so I discovered that roofing was available that also had insulation qualities. In addition, I had other things I wanted to fix as part of this project, like ductwork and insulation, so I needed a roofer who would work with me as I fixed these other items during the roofing project. When I discussed these things with roofers that showed up for quotes, this is where I was able to see problems - in how they responded to my questions. On Angies List, the first thing I did was list the roofers by the number of reviews. I then took the top 5 that were A rated and called them. I mostly left messages with receiptionists but sometimes clicked a link on websites to request a quote online. About half of them never even called me back. Those that did respond were either flaky, rude, or they got so much business that you never saw the owner. When they did show up for quotes they were really nice but there were still problems. Here are specific names. Jack C Wilson roofing sent a lady that talked the talk, but I was suspecting that she was the wife of the owner who learned how to give quotes. She was on the roof for all of 5 minutes. She was nice but did not seem to understand when I started asking about specific details she just brushed them off and said we would deal with in when the roof work began (wrong answer). She came back with a quote quickly but it did not indicate any of these specific items that I knew would increase the cost. K&D Roofing president came to give their quote. In the end I selected K&D to do the project, however, I called the president about 5 times over a 3 week period before I got a call back, and then it was apologies for getting back to me so late. Really, 3 weeks? In addition to calling him directly I called their office a few times and the secretary got to know me because I kept telling her I was trying to reach him. He was really nice when we talked, and his quote was good and detailed, however, taking too long to call me back was an early sign that I would have problems with them if there were issues during or after the project, so I marked them off my list (if I did not fid Mike I would have used them). First Coast Roofing was another one I almost considered. The project manager was nice and wrote up a detailed quote with 2 options so I could consider a plan A and plan B. I really liked this, however they were in 2nd place to K&D because his price was much higher for the same project (I compared details I the quotes). If I didn't find anyone else I would have used them. Next, AJ Wells came to quote. They were real flashy with color brochures, a big fancy truck, and a TV looking professional type guy. However I suspected that they were such a large company that they invested heavily in marketing to give all this flash and pizzaz at the time of the quote, and their numbers showed who pays for all this. Their quote was about $2000 higher than everyone else. If I was replacing a roof in Ponte Vedra I probably would want them, but all this pizzaz in Orange Park? I think not. Some roofers that were really bad was Stern Roofing. The owner himself was doing the house next door, so I thought he would be good to do my roof also. I went next door and personally spoke with him. He was fairly nice and said to schedule an appointment with his office. I did that. A couple days later he was next door again so I went over to ask him a few questions about the upcoming appointment. He was very rude and said he would talk to me during the appointment. Well, the day came and went and he never even showed up. How brave of him, considering the fact that I see him next door almost every day. He ignored me after that and we never spoke again. Another bad experience was River City Roofing. This place was a joke. First they sent a young guy who had no experience with roofing. He was there to check out my roof to see if we could do an insurance claim. I told him I was not looking for that since the whole roof was being torn off but he said they always show up to look at this first to help us out with cost if possible. ok, fine. So I started to ask him about the details of my project and he said he did not know about any of that because he was just there for the insurance inspection. That was a waste of my time. I called the owner and he said that he would discuss the details with me over the phone. He said he had enough experience that he could do this using the pictures taken by that guy. I told him I needed to do this in person so I can point to things as we talk about them. They said they would still do it over the phone. The owner then called me several times trying to get my business, promising to beat everyone else's quote. I had a bad taste from the start with this insurance thing, but I considered them for a while until I got tired of all the promises and no one came out to the house to look at the roof in person (other than that inexperienced guy),
Now for Mike Boucher. When I got his number I called. He answered. He set up a time to come out and was spot on time. He was nice, answered every single detailed question I had, and gave me a quote listing every single detail. He then said that in addition to his crew he actually does the work himself (not a company who sends a crew and you never see the owner). The job was delayed a bit, however he was in touch with me about the schedule and I allowed flexibility since it was not an emergency job. He always answered his phone, or called back within a couple hours if I left a message. He showed up with crew to do the work. He was there 95% of the time, only leaving for small periods of time. He worked with me throughout the project making changes as I needed (to coordinate with the ductwork and insulation issues). If there were any surprises he did not charge me extra (although I would have been willing to pay for most of the additions). The crew was very nice. He always made sure my questions were answered. I decided to renovate the carport room at the same time and he worked with me on that to be sure I could get things done before he installed the new roof. There was only a small increase in cost because of all the rotted wood that was not expected. He cleaned up daily and took the dump truck with him every night (nothing left over night). I have been hiring people for over 10 years and have this house and an apartment building in Riverside and I have to say this was one of the best people I have come across. I wish he did more than just roofing.
