Initially, I was seen by Dr. Otero, who's a brand new, inexperienced vet and a tech. As I didn't have an appointment, I waited about an hour. They were superficially pleasant and seemed concerned about the dogs' welfare and my own. I explained the timeline of how the allergy progressed. They gave my dog a brief exam and during this exam, I explained that as someone who is on disability I have a very limited budget and would appreciate it if they could work with me on price and payments. They had a 10% discount on Tuesday-Thursday. Being that it was Monday evening, I asked if they could apply the discount as a generous courtesy. I was told they need to ask the owner, Dr. Stein. In the meantime, the vet left the room for 15-20 minutes to discuss the situation with a more experienced vet or her manager. She came back and suggested a course of action that included every available (and unnecessary) test at a price well over my budget. I again explained my financial situation, and she said she'll be right back. Instead of trying to provide the best care for my dog, she offered what she called "alternatives" by removing services that I knew were needed suggesting superficial remedies. We went through this 3 times and I felt like I was buying a used car! In the end, after over 3 hours and having no choice realizing that they were only interested in money I agreed to the treatment the vet suggested. One of which was a blood test to be sent to an external lab. This treatment turned out not to be what I had agreed to, but at the time I did not notice. One of the medications was an antibiotic that the vet initially insisted that I had to buy from them. I knew that this was available for free at Publix and asked her to call in the prescription. I was left in the room for 30 minutes while she "looked into it". When she came back, she told me that she spoke to the pharmacy and they only carry a different antibiotic and it isn't as good. She refused to give me a written prescription which was very odd. She also told me that she spoke with the owner at home and she refused to make any adjustments to the price. I asked that the owner contact me, so I can discuss this with her directly. In the end, after 4 grueling hours, I left there to pick up what I thought were the correct medications to take care of my dog. I asked the office manager if there was a way I could split the payment in two with my credit card and was told (with a nasty attitude) I don't know you, so no. He went on to further lecture me on their policy to pay in full when service is rendered in order to get tests processed. I paid and left. When I got to the pharmacy, the pharmacist gave me the medications, but i saw they were incorrect. He tried to call but the clinic had closed already. I called the clinic early the next morning and spoke to Dr. Hamerslag. She told me they prescribed the wrong antibiotic, and the wrong dose. She told me to double up on the medication and they would call in a refill since the medication wouldn't have lasted the entire treatment time of 2 weeks. I asked her about the lab results and she told me to call later. I called later and got the same office manager, who told me "they forgot to send it out that night" and it won't be picked up until the next day. I asked him if I should then withhold payment until I get the test results as the service wasn't rendered. He became agitated and threatening stating that if I do that there will be dire consequences. At that point I again asked that the owner call me. Sometime later that day, I got a call from Dr. Kaplan-Stein. I explained the situation briefly, however throughout the call she continued to interrupt and refused to listen to me. She boasted about how she provides pet care to the homeless and indigent, accused me of berating her employees, interrupting her personal time at home, and trying to "pull a fast one", not knowing how to ask for charity, and finally, telling me I am no longer welcome at their clinic and to pick up my records the next day. Then she hung up on me. I called the next afternoon and was told my records are ready and the results are in. When I got there, I was forced to wait an hour until I was given the records. The receptionist claimed Dr. Kaplan-Stein wasn't finished. When I got the records, they were completely falsified, filled with outright lies and inaccuracies. It was apparent that they were written up after the fact. None of the notations in the copy of the notes I received were the same as I saw the tech and vet write. In fact, the dates of injury and circumstances were not even close to being true. They were manipulated to place me in the worst light possible. Many of the words and phrases were Dr. Kaplan-Stein's, verbatim! None of the vets would agree to translate the test results for me. I was told by the office manager I am no longer a "customer" and I should seek service elsewhere. They provided me with a Google search of vets in the area. A week later the pharmacy called to have them refill the prescription and they refused.
I had to find another vet, at an additional cost, to have my dog treated. Luckily, I found an amazing vet who correctly diagnosed and treated my dog, at an affordable price, and even was willing to split the payment in two.
Interestingly enough, at the dog park I had many discussions with other dog owners, some that are long time residents of Gainesville. Since then, I've met 11 people who've had similar experiences of being price gouged by Oaks, and they all are no longer patients there. They were either asked to leave when they complained or left to find quality care elsewhere for their pets. I find it hard to believe that this place ever got a real rating by an unplanted customer.
Surprisingly, they've been sending me multiple emails to rate them on Google and other services, offering discounts and or freebies as well as other offers and announcement, in spite of me no longer being welcome. I've tried to unsubscribe, but they continue to send me system generated emails. The conceited, elitist attitude exhibited by Dr. Kaplan-Stein and her staff was unprofessional, negligent, unethical, and down-right abusive. There is no way they deserve a positive rating on Angie's List or anywhere else. It's disappointing that Angie's List cannot filter out scam artists like this.
The bottom line is that they refused to complete treatment that they were paid in full for. I recommend steering clear of this Oaks Veterinary Hospital!
"Dr. Kaplan-Stein and her associates at Oaks and Northwood Oaks Veterinary Hospital strive to provide the highest possible quality of both customer service and medical care. [member name removed] was not satisfied with any of the numerous options that we offered to him. We wish him the best and hope that Daisy finds the care that she deserves."
When we started having her groomed it was $50.00 and now it is $65.00 and they did not tell us the prices had increased and when I called to question it they did not reply.
We am looking for another veterinary hospital.
They have many vets and all of them take great care of my pets. I prefer Dr. Hammerslag she saved my dogs lifes once.
The prescriptions at the Vets can sometimes be filled at a regular pharmacy. Most of the time the Vet will tell you this, but if not ask. I have had them offer to come down on their prices because it was substantially cheaper at Wallmart.
"The staff at Oaks Veterinary Hospital are saddened to hear of your discontent with our services. We try to fairly price our procedures and products as compared to other hospitals in the area. We do offer three year rabies vaccines for dogs. However, since it is widely known that cats can develop a fibrosarcoma from the three year rabies vaccine, we have elected to use only non-adjuvanted vaccines to eliminate any added worries for our clients. We also recommend six month visits in order to give your pet the best preventative care available, but we do not require them. Our reminder calls and emails are tools used to keep pet owners informed about their pet’s needs and about issues concerning them. Please give us a quick call if you would like us to discontinue these contacts. We would like to apologize for any inconvenience we may have caused. At Oaks, we take great pride in our work in every aspect of the clinic. We would love to invite you back to discuss your dissatisfaction and work out a more fitting health maintenance plan for your pet."
