Gary Martin is a liar and a thief.
I first came to Gainesville in 2011 after I had separated from my husband, came here with 3 kids and moved into a fixer-upper. I had to do all the remodeling myself, on a shoestring budget. One day as I was going to Home Depot I saw a used stove in front of Martin's Appliances that I thought would work for me. I went in and explained my situation and told them that I was not ready to pick it up yet because I had yet to remodel the kitchen, and it might be 2-3 months before I could get it. Gary Martin was very friendly and encouraged me to buy it, promising he would hold on to it as long as it took, so I paid for it. (I didn't want to take it home because being in the middle of moving and remodeling, I already had too many materials and moving boxes in the house, I was jammed).
Gary Martin made me sign a contract and I noticed the fine print said that if I did not pick within 30 days, I would lose the appliance. I pointed that out, and he said, not to worry about it that's just their standard contract, and he would hold on to it for me as long as it took. I put a line through that clause just in case.
A month later I saw my stove again out on the sidewalk with a for sale sign on it. I went in and told them that was my stove, I had already paid for it. Gary Martin was not there at the time but the employee said he would talk to the owner about it. I got worried about it so a few days later I went to pick it up. This time I was not greeted with the phony, welcoming politeness with which I had been greeted before, this time it was pure disdain from the start. I was told that I had abandoned my appliance and he didn't know where it was now, probably at the other shop on Main Street, but in any case I had no right to come in demanding it since it had been over 30 days. I said I would go to the Main Street shop myself and pick it up but he refused to let me do so, saying it was too late, I had abandoned it, I had no rights. When I threatened to take him to court him over it, he said I should turn around and go home and maybe if he felt like it he may mail me a check for whatever amount he saw fit. He eventually sent me a check for $200, pocketing the remaining $79 plus tax, just enough to keep me from taking him to court, knowing it would cost me more than that to fight it. Still in the middle of a major remodel and being the single mom of 3 kids including a foster child, I didn't have the energy to pursue it any further.
SHAME ON GARY MARTIN for taking advantage of someone in that situation!
