"We are sorry that this customer has had a bad experience with Crystal Air & Water Inc. We are confused about the review for several reasons. The water heater was installed by Crystal Air & Water for [member name removed] program on 9/7/10 for no charge to the customer. On 9/16/10 the technician made a full evaluation of the water heater's operation and found the unit to be fully operational. There was no charge for that visit for it was with in Crystal Air & Water Inc.'s one year complimentary labor warranty. On 9/22/10 the permit passed inspection with the county of Alachua. In December 2010 the customer had repairs done to the air conditioner for a total of $305.85. Those are the only charges this customer has had. Not $700.00, and not for the water heater. Also, Crystal Air & Water Inc. has never changed ownership. Once again, we are sorry for your bad experience. We would love the opportunity to help solve the issue for we have the most experienced technicians in the area."

Crystal Air and Water of Gainesville Florida came to my house and replaced a thermostat. It took about 15 minutes. They charged me for parts $179 for a Honeywell 5000 2 heat 1 cool thermostat, not programmable either. You can buy this exact model at any Home depot or Lowes for about $39.00 retail! Not $179.00 like they charged us. We were told that it is the cheapest one that they carry on their truck for a replacement.
In addition I was charged $69.95 for the house call plus a $5 fuel charge and they are located less then 5 miles from my house.
The Biggest Issue:
When I lodged a compliant on Tuesday morning with Crystal Air and reported them to the BBB, ?Curt ? the owner, said he?d issue me a refund check of $79, if I dropped my compliant with the BBB. I did as he requested on Tuesday afternoon. I did not get my check thru Thursday, so on Thursday afternoon I called and I was told that the check was in the mail. On Friday I still did not receive the check, I called again and I
think you know what he said??I won?t sign the check?. They lied to me twice and overcharged me for the thermostat. Jinnee, the secretary, also told me that the proverbial ?check is in the mail? and I?m ashamed to say they took me twice; at least I didn?t buy that bridge in Brooklyn.
"On 10/1/12, [member name removed] was referred to our company by the unlicensed contractor he had working in his home, [member name removed] placed a service call with us. The handyman\contractor could not figure out why the thermostat he was installing would not work. Our service technician went to his home and found the thermostat was faulty and there was a problem with the low voltage wiring. Our technician repaired the problem with the low voltage wiring and quoted [member name removed] a price to install a new thermostat. [member name removed] agreed to the pricing and signed his invoice. He was also charged for a diagnostic fee, fuel charge & a minor wiring repair fee. All totaling $284.95, the invoice was paid by the customer while the technician was onsite. On 10/2/12, the customer called & I spoke with him. [member name removed] stated that if he wanted a refund and that we had one hour to do so or he would start filing complaints with BBB and others. He also stated we were at his house for fifteen minutes and we were there for 1.75 hours as the invoice shows that he signed. I do not appreciate the inaccuracies in his statement or his threats to damage the reputation of our company in his attempt to get his money back. [member name removed] is in violation of Florida Statue 455.228 which states that is unlawful to hire and unlicensed contractor and the fine is up to $5000.00 for intentionally hiring an unlicensed contractor. We did not turn [member name removed] over to the state authorities. That is not how we do business. But I refuse to bend to his threats, and intimidations, of sullying our reputation. We strongly recommend to other contractors to put this individual on their do not work for list."
(1) 06-19-2010: Technician skipped a "number" of items on their published check list.
45 days later, 08-02-2010, system failure resulted in $54.95 Service fee.
(2) 06-17-2011: Technician skipped a "number" of items on their published check list.
I told him that the system didn't seem to be cooling properly for the past few weeks, and was running continuously for
extended periods of time.
At first, he indicated that the Freon "appeared" low. I told him that if there was any indication of a leak, or required
servicing, that he do it "then" rather than costing me an additional Service Call in the near future.
He assured me that it had come up, and that there were no problems with the system !
(3) 09-26-2011: Even with the cooler weather, it seemed clearly evident that the system was not cooling properly, so I called
them out again, and I was told that the system was low on Freon, indicating a serious leak
.
wasn't cooling properly, and though there was evidence of low freon, he had assured me that there was no problem.
She told me that I should have called within the 30 day warranty period. (Apparently I, the customer, should have 2nd
guessed their technician, and determined that he didn't perform a proper check!)
I asked the technician what the leak check would cost, and he began quoting hundreds of dollars, including $86.00 for Dye,
that I later discovered costs less than $5.00.
I asked the Customer Service Rep. if she could give me an estimate of what the leak check would cost, and she flatly
refused! (I was apparently expected to OK the work, without any idea of the cost, other.than it would be" hundreds"
of dollars.)
To put that into perspective, I subsequently called several other companies, and they all had Flat-Rate amounts for doing a
Freon leak check; and the company I chose to do the check did the entire check, requiring only 15 minutes with a
electronic "sniffer" device for the total price of a $65.00 Service call.
My assessment of Crystal Air & Water is that they "bait" customers with low initial Service Call fees, but gouge you if you need
a repair.
It also appears that they have a large turn-over of service personnel, which brings into question the competence of their
service technicians. ( The technician with the company that satisfactorily completed the work, had been with them for 10
years.)
