The first repair was completed successfully, though they visibly struggled to get it to work. They had trouble with the car's computer system interacting with their programming tool, and had to deflate the air bag manually (i.e. stick a screw driver in it). To their credit they kept after it; to my concern this is a common repair and they struggled. But it was completed the same day and appears to work fine, and was significantly less expensive than the dealer.
My second repair is more troubling. I had oil start to appear in the garage, and took it in. They found that the valve covers were leaking, and charged $2300 approximately to repair them. I paid, and got the car back in several days. A few days later the leak is back, same approximate amount, same place. I return to them, to their credit they discover that the leak was because their repair was incorrect, and the do the same repair again for no cost.
A few days later the leak is back on the floor, same place, same amount. I return to them again. This time "not the same place, this is the alternator bracket". Need $1100 to replace the seal on the bracket. Definitely not the same problem (they say), just a coincidence this occurred at the same time.
I take it to two other places just to make sure I know the real probolems, and in fact there are TWO additional leaks - the alternator bracket and the crankcase seal. I got it fixed at another place who was extremely professional, but more expensive than Tills. Now after quite a bit of driving I still have a dry floor. They also found bad bushings in the front that needed to be replaced (both did), something Till's did not mention or detect.
Was the first leak actually leaking? Perhaps - I do not mean to imply they made it up. But was it just wet, and not the actual source of the problem? The crankcase leak was also just beginning to leak, and probably not reaching the floor (yet), but the alternator bracket definitely was (as confirmed by two independent mechanics) My guess is that Till's saw some oil on the valve covers and leaped to a $2300 premature repair, but I have no way to know.
What I am absolutely certain of is that they missed at least two oil leaks in two visits, and one leak in the third. They claim "we are unable to see the lower leaks until we fix the upper". I understand the principle that oil flows downhill, but common sense seems to say if you clean the whole engine area, run it a bit, you can see them both if you don't wait too long. And even if NOT, after fixing the first leak THEY should have looked for the second rather than sending me home "fixed".
The owners (father and son and I think grand son) were professional and polite, but seemed to have no understanding why I was disappointed in them, and offered no solution to "how do I know after $1100 I won't still have a leak". In fact they pretty much said "we have to fix one leak at a time, then look for more if it still shows up on the floor". I found their lack of skin in the game disappointing, and their rather linear approach, one at a time, unprofessional.
I also found their maintenance manager (Smitty) to be arrogant and hard to deal with, exactly the opposite of the owners. He makes you feel like just walking in the door you've done something wrong. I saw him, in my presence, blast a new customer who said "I have been calling about my parts and you do not return my calls" who had then arrived in person, by saying "there is no point in coming here, I'll call you when I have your parts". I was so embarrassed at the nasty treatment he was receiving I left the reception area. He was similarly nasty to me -- saying effectively "how can you expect us to fix a leak on the bottom of the engine if there is also a leak on the top".
Well... I do expect it of someone who is truly an expert on BMW repair. HOW they do it is what they should know, not ask me rhetorical questions. Just as I expected them to be able to hook my car to their programming system, which never worked for the air bag.
They are very cost effective -- I paid about $1800 for the $1100 repair that Tills wanted (the dealer wanted $2500). However, I was treated politely by their manager, and my car was fixed correctly, so I feel I got the better deal.
I'm not sure they deserve the "C" given the failure to correct the problem, but I really do feel the owners tried hard, and they were completely professional in dealing with me.
