My 91 year old mother owns a condo in Bonita Beach. She lives out of state and only is there in the early winter and sometimes part of the fall. She entered an agreement in late October 2015 with Seth Dunning of Seth's A-1 Home Service. There were problems with Seth from the very beginning. He agreed to start on 11/3 and finish on 11/11/15. The condo is a small studio unit. As November went by, the job was never completed. We repeatedly pointed out to him that the job needed to be done by December 14 because a renter was coming in. He finally got around to doing the job in the final week in the final days before a renter was due to check in. He flew through the job and thoroughly botched it. He visibly didn't use spacer so the tiles were consistently out of alignment. Many tiles were higher than the others. The entry door wouldn't open more than halfway because he didn't even out the floor/ door properly. After we discovered the problems, we had several people from the property management company inspect the unit and everyone unanimously agreed that the job was thoroughly botched and the entire tilework needed to be ripped up and the job started over. My mom paid $444.80 for down payment for the labor. She also paid for the tile and grout over the phone to Home Depot in Bonita Springs for $1225.08, plus an additional $500 for subflooring. After the tile job was done, Seth demanded my mom wire transfer him the labor balance of $1774.20 but she was resistant to wiring money like that. Looking back on it now, it could have been because he wanted payment BEFORE anyone saw his work. Unfortunately, my mom sent him a check and it was deposited before the job was appropriately inspected. The condo remained previously booked throughout the winter and early spring until the last week of April. After his job was under such scrutiny and criticism from the property management company as well the on-site condo association, Seth agreed to rip up the tile and redo the job the last week of April, 2016. I booked a flight to come down and inspect the unit before I drove to Orlando for a business conference on May 17. He had removed the old floor but did not install any new tile as of May 17th. I was shocked and disappointed and told him so. He came up with a lot of excuses about being too busy and things came up and he will get to it. I talked with the management company, Vacation Rental Pros, who had originally recommended him. They talked to Seth and he agreed to complete the job by May 28th. He did not complete the job and did not put down a single tile. On the last day of the latest agreement (May 28) Seth entered the condo and removed all the new tile and grout that was bought to redo the job. He repeatedly said that he would fully refund the money that was paid to him by my mom as well as the materials she bought and in his words "make this right". He initially sent my mom $500 back. We tried to work out a refund payment plan after that but it went nowhere. After that we never heard from him again and repeated calls and texts from us were not returned. Not only were we out $3900.00 dollars in materials and labor for an unfinished job, we also had to hire another contractor to finish the job which cost almost an additional $3000. We also lost all potential rental revenue for the summer as the condo was not rentable while work was being done.
Description of Work: Seth Dunning removed old linoleum and carpeted flooring in our condo. He then installed new ceramic tile throughout including bathroom, kitchen and living room area.
