We have used auto brokers in the past, but we wanted to look at actual cars, and if the cost was within $1000 or so wanted to buy directly from the dealer since it's only fair to reimburse them for the expense involved in maintaining a physical site.
However when we went to sign the contract, all sorts of charges were added. We had dealt with stuff like this years ago before - this is why we started to use auto brokers - but I expected better of this particular dealer. It was unpleasant, high pressure, and quite time-consuming. My spouse wanted to conclude things so we did not walk out, but I estimate this cost us about $1500 to $2000. We realized later how little care was taken for customer-friendly details. Here is one example: one might expect even a small automobile dealer to know that it will cost the customer about $150 extra to order a new plate rather than transfer the old one, but Rick Case automatically ordered a new plate without offering or discussing the option.
When we picked up the car a week later it was all business. There were no warm greetings, no and quot;do you have any questionsand quot; - not much but and quot;here's your car and we're busy.and quot;
We will use another dealer or an auto broker next time.
I made the mistake twice in the past of trying to take to other (non-dealer) places in the past, and both times it was a fiasco. The one repair shop outright lied and told me that the noisy a/c belt that needed tightening was in fact my timing belt needing to be replaced and they wanted $400 to replace a timing belt on a car that only 40,000 miles at the time. I'm not a car mechanic, but even I know that is WRONG. I took it Rick Case and only told them the engine was making a noise to see what they would say and they tightened the offending belt and didn't charge me a thing.
The other time I made the mistake of taking my car somewhere else, I had gotten a coupon for a and quot;freeand quot; oil change at a tire place in exchange for donating blood. I took my car to the tire place when it opened at 7AM on a Saturday morning, I was only the 2nd customer there. I waited nearly 3 hours and my car was still not and quot;doneand quot;, in fact, it was on a lift with all the tires removed. Now, again, I am no mechanic but who takes the wheels off to change the oil!!! I complained to the staff and when the manager came out to speak to me, he claimed that my rear brakes were and quot;shotand quot; and that they needed repair ASAP for a cost of $400. I smiled and said thank you for letting me know, but I only have dealerships work on my car and that I would be taking my car down the street to Rick Case to have it checked out. He quickly became panicky and said and quot;Well, we're not responsible for anything that happens if you leave here without the repairand quot; and I pointed out I had driven 20 miles there to have the oil change just fine and that Rick Case was only a mile away. Mind you, I had not had any issues with my brakes nor had they made any noise prior this incident.
I took my car to Rick Case immediately and only asked that they check the brakes, specifically the rear brakes, again not giving any details about what I had been told by the tire shop. They came back and said the brakes were fine, no issues and I had plenty of brake pad left on BOTH front and back and they should be good for some time. Again, NO CHARGE. I told the staff what happened at the at the tire shop and they just shook their heads.
So my point is that Rick Case Honda will NOT do work on your car unless you NEED it. No fake repairs, no BS, just good honest, fairly priced repair work. My 1997 Honda Del Sol has over 210,000 miles on it, original engine, etc., and it looks and runs GREAT. People try to buy it from me all the time but I love it so much. I give a lot of credit not only to Honda for making a quality car, but also to Rick Case for maintaining it so well. I've been taking my car their since I moved to South Florida in 2002, and I will continue taking it there!
