They were very good. They did a good job. They did what they were supposed to do at a reasonable price.

One of my neighbors who is a mechanic and has a shop that is AAA certified told me to find a AAA shop in my area. I found one. I took the car to Sterns telling them what was the problem regarding the smoke. Their initial feeling as with the other mechanics I consulted was probably a blown head gasket. They took the car in and did a diagnostic on it and could not find the typical symptoms of a blown head gasket such as varying internal pressure problems in the engine cylinders. After looking the car over and it NOT exhibiting any of the problems even after road testing, they knew it was not a blown head gasket and, that for them at the time it was running and quot;like a topand quot;. I left the shop and the next day the smoke resumed. I realized that they had made a serious attempt to fix the problem and could easily have and quot;sold me a head gasket repairand quot; but instead were honest with me and charged me only for diagnostic time. I was amazed and pleased. However a problem did still remain. I had my daughter go with me for a ride and when the car started to do the smoking she took a photograph. I went back to Sterns and showed them the photo. They knew there was still a problem so we rescheduled and they went at it again. As it turned out I had a broken off PCV valve that was sucking engine oil into the combustion chambers and burning oil thus causing the large cloud of smoke. Since the valve bottom had broken off there was the possibility that the broken pieces were under the valve cover (which had a slow leak) so the took off the cover to be sure there were not pieces of the valve in there that would damage my valve train and put on a new gasket and reinstalled the cover.
PROBLEM SOLVED!
This is an example of how a good honest shop operates. They made a diligent effort to find the problem. They did not assume anything and sell me the most expensive fix. After giving the problem more time they found the solution and a good fix. No one can ask for more
