1) Installed worm hole wood in areas of each room,, and at that time, which was represented to me that they were tree branch marks and just "character". He focused the ugliest wood into the larger closets and it looks horrible. I was told that they were tree branch marks and could not be avoided. ( I found out later that they are suppose to pick out all the bad pieces and have others to replace them)
2) The day I went to see him and signed my first proposal. I stated to Mr. Sexton, I did not want to see excessive character in my floors, and I took pictures of the samples for which he told me that my floors would look like and that he could make our floors look anyway we wanted to in color, etc. We reviewed pieces that had character in his showroom, he represented to me that Hicktory would be a better fit for less character and that it would also be harder than Oak. On his proposal, he still wrote in Character on the paper and when I mentioned it to him, he represented to me that all wood has character, it depends on the grade but assured me that I would not have what I told him to be and pointed out in the samples he showed me "zebra stripes " all over my flooring. He also had me pick out a sample to show him what color I wanted the floors, and I did. I took a picture of this and the other samples he showed me. I signed his proposal. TO NOTE: He stated he only accepted cash, so I had to pay the first 1/2 $12,300 in cash and i gave him a cashiers check for each payment he was given. It was a few months before we could have them installed because he wanted us to order a french door set before he could install and it too almost 3 months to get it. (door company fault)
3) Once he leveled and installed the wood, you could not see all the excess character of the wood until they put the stain on.
Once the stain was applied we were shocked to see 1)excessive character all over the floors; 2) the wrong color, or barely any color/stain; ugly werd color and so much different colors it was ridiculous. Horrible looking. The closet had "large dirty areas" in it. This was what we could see from just peeking in from the kitchen. We were not allowed on them for several days which we adhered to.
Upon closer inspection, we noted all 2000 sq ft to have large and small scratches all over them,"" all over them,"" and swirl marks left from the edger on the floors and those had taken the stain, cracks in the living room and dinning room floor, wood putty that was left outside the cracks of the wood and just smeared and stained over, two actual shoe prints in the hallway and closet ; worm hole wood not only in the closets and large dark patches in the closets, and worm hole wood randomly placed in almost all rooms, actual stain drops that had been smeared and left like that across the floor in our master bedroom sitting room and hall, stain drops left and dried, a few chipped areas in the living room, closet, and master bedroom, an area in the master bedroom that was not sanded properly and was uneven. The color of the floors was not the same in any one given area, there was a clear definition of change in color from the hallway in master sitting area to the master bedroom. It looked like a large majority had not even taken stain, and the ones that did, looked werd and the character took on werd shades to include black lines. Understand we ask for BROWN floors. NO YELLOW, NO RED TONES.......JUST BROWN.
2000 sq ft of damaged hardwood, lowest quality hardwood, lowest character hardwood, and floors that cost us an additional just shy of $11,000 extra to have them re sanded, repaired, and restained properly so we can at least live with the low quality product he installed. He went so far as to say we went thru the house and scratched it ourselves, and that he would be glad to charge us an additional $5000 to fix the issues. Needless to say, we would have never ever trusted this individual to fix the floors. From the beginning, we feel strongly we were mislead, product was misrepresented, and he at the end did not give us the product that he promised and that we ask for or do a proper sanding/staining job on the low quality flooring he installed.
We have been living in one room of our home for 8 months while remodeling. This left us an additional month to not be able to move into our home. We have sense learned not only did he install the lowest grade/excessive character wood, but wood that will scratch easily, so we have to worry about that and they will probably wear quicker and we have now lost 2 layers of flooring life from these awful floors.
Very disappointed in the quality of work, quality of what he installed, and misrepresentation, and final product, damage done to the flooring, horrible staining job, and the overall finished product he left us to deal with. If I could give pics with this review, I would.
I was on Houzz.com trying to get ideas for my project when I saw a designer that recommend Mark's company for the wood floors that he had previously installed. It was a long shot, but I just happened to be in the area so I stop by his showroom. I didnt know it was by appointment only, but he was able to accommodate me. Please call first because hes a busy individual. Mind you I had already done my research; I showed him pics of my project, I drilled him with a lot of technical questions that I already knew the answer to, and he was the first person that I dealt with that I felt comfortable doing business with. Not only did Mark talk me down from a solid to a engineered wood flooring (which potentially saved me a lot headaches and $$$), he was very up front with the cost of the installation, and even broke it down into detail per sq ft including the price per stair treads before coming to the house to do the quote. Mark also recommended a custom stair railing company that he works with; I felt comfortable with them so I ended up contracting with them too. Im still waiting for them to do the install, so stand by for that review.
I was very flexible with my schedule and was in no rush for them to do the install. It took them about a month and half to order the wood floors and stain the stair treads. When we finally came to a agreement on the date, it only took them two days to do the install. The guys showed up on time and they were very meticulous about every little detail. No shortcuts were taken and they even calulked all the stair treads and bullnose which I wasnt expecting for them to do. They were also very clean, professional, and courteous to keeping the door closed so my dogs wouldnt run out of the house. These guys did an awesome job and it was a pleasure to work with them. I will definitely call them again to install the wood floors in my bedrooms when Im ready. I cant say enough good thing about these guys. They werent cheapest flooring contractors that I got a quote from, but Im very happy with the work that they did.
We got quotes from many others on Angie's list and no one else came close to what Mark did for us in price and quality.
The bottom line is that our stairs and flooring look fantastic! We've received so many positive compliments from friends and family, and we are extremely happy. Mark worked with us every step of the way, and we would recommend him to anyone looking for a high quality flooring installation and attentive customer service. Mark spent considerable time (in addition to the services listed above) to help us find a contractor to install our stair handrails after another contractor backed out, and helped us to match the stain that he used for the custom treads. He even provided us with a special cleaner for our new floors and sent us a personalized thank you note after work was completed. I wish every company had that level of customer service!!
