John came out to assess the situation at the end of a work day in the pouring rain on the day that I initially called. We liked him right away since he spoke in a straightforward manner. He was clear that he was unable to assess the problem accurately in the rain since the drip, which we noticed under the house, was not so obvious in the rain in the area we had removed one panel of the skirting. We do have a crawl space with access but it was clear to us that John, being a big guy, clearly would have difficulty accessing & assessing the problem from the normal crawl space access point. We agreed that he would return the following Monday with a helper to assess and resolve the problem. In the meantime we removed more of the skirting in the area of the leak.
Monday came, I received a call prior to his arrival, and he & his assistant went to work quickly & efficiently. Problem solved - they found a broken pipe under the home, repaired it and stopped the dripping in my kitchen sink besides. His fee was a reasonable price. I am very pleased with the work he did.
We had used another local plumber months before as we moved into the home. Although we paid them more than twice as much they did little but tighten a few fixtures. When tightened the plumbing under the kitchen sink, they didn't adjust the dripping kitchen faucet because I didn't ask specifically. John did it without my asking, he did a more complex repair, and even good-naturedly calmed our constantly barking little dog as he worked inside the home.
I to am a single women in my 50's and didn't feel taken advantage of. Would feel comfortable recommending John to my mom or any of her friends.
budget for this bath was getting out of line and funds were getting low. He said " Don't worry you'll be able to afford it.? When they decided that they should move the inlet lines a few inches, again I asked him how much it would cost. He said ?Nothing ". At the end of it all he charged me $650. You could have knocked me over with a feather. I've talked to a number of people
about this and they thought that he over charged me. I do too. I think he over charged me by at least $200, probably more. I don't normally write bad reviews. I usually let it go and don't say anything. However, I know that John works at many homes that seniors live and I'm concerned that he might take advantage of them even more than me. I'm in my 50's. I wonder how much he would have charged me if I was in my 80's and perhaps not as savvy.
I know that many of you are thinking that I should have stood firm and not allowed John to have the job unless we agreed upon a price. You are right.
