We made a call to Modern Air for service on 4/28, follow-up to a week before, for a 6.5 yr. old 13 SEER compressor, installed by MA in 9/07 and older air handler system - both under contract and the former under warranty. a week before the call, our regular maintenance service man had put 4 # of R22 Freon into the condenser unit outside and told us that the leak in the air handler must be getting worse because it took so much. They charged us $325 for the Freon at that time. When Eddie, a service man I was familiar with came in on 4/28, he thoroughly tested the system and said that there was no Freon in the condenser and that the coil had holes in it. He checked the air handler and said that the hole in it was minor and could probably be sealed with a sealant that they could provide but that we would have to replace the condenser coil. The coil was under warranty, but it was going to cost over $500 to fix it. We asked Eddie to ask for a quote on a new outside unit; a quote on just the coil replacement; and a new outside unit and air handler to replace the whole thing.
We called Modern Air and spoke to Kim and asked where the quote was. We got an email on 4/30 with a quote from the service manager addressed to "Ray and Rose Scotts" (my name for the past 19 years with Modern Air and always is Rose Marie Ray and my spouse is Sanford "Sandy" Scott). The quote was for (1) a 15 SEER unit ($6495) and (2), a 13 SEER unit ($5295) Repair only of $1410, installed, to replace the coil--still under warranty but will only be warrantied this way for one year, and 30 days for the labor; Two quotes for new, whole house filtration systems - which we did not ask for.
We did not get a visit to explain that we could get a rebate for the 15 SEER unit. We did not get a call to find out what we were doing without air conditioning for a week; we did not get approval for a credit for the $325 spent on the Freon that went into a unit with holes in it and that provided us no air conditioning and, in fact, were told that we would only get the credit if we did the work with them.
After 19 years of having Modern Air under contract for washing machines and dryers, freezers, fridge, stove, dish washers, pool heater, 2-5 ton air conditioning systems, and a smaller system at my business for 10 years and then 8 years in my home, this was a disappointing and awful response for our needs.
e On Thursday, we contacted another vendor on May 1 after finding that we would not get a credit for the $325, and they installed a new system on Saturday morning. We have had no further contact from Modern Air but still have a contract for service and maintenance on another air conditioner for our home. We were very disappointed to be treated so badly after so many years of excellent service from this company.,
