When I first called, I got an answering machine. My call was returned a couple hours later, and we scheduled a time for October 22nd between 1:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m.
On the appointment date, I got a call saying he could be earlier than the scheduled time, which was fine by me.
He flushed the valves and corrected an electrical problem. The sprinklers worked, and he mentioned possible other problems.
He was here for 25 - 30 minutes, and the charge was $125. That's $250/hour!
The next day the sprinklers had the same problem. When I called him, I asked what his minimum charge was. He said it was $85. However, that didn't include the actual time he spent working on the problem, nor did it include the cost of materials. He said he couldn't do work for free.
He had no materials cost for my work. So, not including his minimum charge, he charged $40 for 30 minutes work. That's a rate of $80/hour.
I figured that the work he'd suggested would take a minimum of an hour to complete. The bill for him to do the work would then be $85 minimum charge, and $80 in addition to do the work. A total of $165 in addition to the $125 I'd already paid him.
I told him to forget it, and I'd contact somebody else.
