Grayhawk installed a slider in my kitchen were one had been removed years ago. I can't say enough about their salesman, Joe, and he is the reason they are getting a B rather than C or D. Joe is knowledgeable, responsive and professional. The problem was their sub-contractor. Though I did not know it at the time, this was the first time Grayhawk had used him. It was a small job and this guy was supposedly experienced, so they ended up giving him MY small job. The first problem was, he installed the window right over top of the laminate floor. I had told him this laminate was going to be replaced, so I wondered why he wouldn't have pulled it up and secured the window to the concrete floor -- but what do I know, I thought he knew what he was doing. (When the laminate installer saw that, he freaked. He said laminate should never have anything screwed into it, and there were multiple other reasons this was all wrong. He somehow was able to work around it but he was very upset about having to do it that way, and I was upset worrying about something going wrong with my window down the road due to the fact it was installed over laminate.) Back to the sub-contractor -- he put the molding back up on the window with those little finishing nails. He left some sticking out and others were hammered in, but in any case he told me I had to fill it in with wood putty myself (again, what do I know, I thought maybe this was outside the scope of the job). The window itself was beautiful, but he left a piece of black rubber hanging off the bottom of the screen. I called Joe to complain about all this and he immediately came out. He was not happy with the quality of this guy's work, much less the snafu with the laminate. He promised he would make it right, and the next thing you know, guess who's calling me -- the sub-contractor! This was the LAST guy I wanted to see come out to "fix" things. I called Joe to complain, and he said the owner insisted the sub was the one who had to fix the issues since Grayhawk had paid him for the work. I was not thrilled with this at all, but Joe said he would come with him to make sure everything was right. There was nothing that could be done about the laminate issue other than taking the window out, and Joe assures me it should not be a problem. But the sub was totally lazy about the other stuff -- at one point, he said he didn't have any wood putty on the truck and Joe told him to go buy some and come back. Joe sat with me while the guy went out and probably had lunch before he got back an hour later. Despite Joe's strong customer service skills, the fact that the owner sent back the incompetent sub-contractor to fix the work he had done incompetently is ridiculous. And having the sub-contractor call me so, what, I can explain all the stuff he did wrong and he can BS his way out of it? I had no confidence in this man and yet the owner has him call me. Anyway, after all this, the only reason Grayhawk gets a B is (1) Joe, and (2) the quality of the window itself. Would I use them again? I highly doubt it, despite everything that Joe did for me. At the same time I was dealing with this, my neighbor was dealing with the fact that Grayhawk installed her windows in the wrong rooms -- got them all backwards. Perhaps the bigger, pricier jobs get better installers, but how do you really know who you're getting. I feel bad giving them this review after everything Joe did for me but as an Angie's List customer, I want other customers to be aware of my experience, especially if they're using Grayhawk for a smaller job.
