I contacted American Paint Masters primarily for work required by my home insurance company. Additionally, there were some repair items around the house of rotted wood, a rotted door and water stained ceiling from when a wind sheer tore off part of roof and resulting in leaks which stained the kitchen area and enclosed porch ceilings.
What Happened:
I narrowed my contractor choice down to two from reviews I had read on Angie's List. Both contractors came out and gave estimates. American Paint Masters were more expensive by a good bit, but I chose them because Danny Jones President and owner of the company appeared to be a stable and honest person, who was willing to contact my insurance agent and make sure that the required items were done to the insurance company's specification. I felt this showed initiative and believed it a hallmark of a conscientious contractor.
The house had a decorative coat of stucco added about 15 years ago. At that time a decorative façade was added around the outside of the window wells which was stucco coated as well. The decorative façade on the windows had hairline cracks which the insurance company wanted sealed and repainted.
Painters were a day late starting, but Danny came out with another person to pressure wash the areas to be painted. The day the painters were to complete the job. Danny Jones asked for the remainder of the payment---- less the cost of the wood door. so that he could make payroll. Since it looked like the rotted wood and the door were the only open items and Danny appeared to be a stand up guy, I did give him the balance (7/19) And as you know........ that was SOOOOOO foolish
The painters did a good job on the window façade and the insurance company is satisfied. The fascia board and front porch pillars are fine as well. That is where the satisfaction ends. Metal front door was only partially sanded prior to priming and painting. There are stains from the leak coming through on the enclosed porch ceiling as stain concealer did not work.
Danny Jones came by 4 days after outdoor window work and ceiling painting (7/24) was completed to pick up equipment. We reviewed the remaining issues. He told me he would fix front door, repaint enclosed porch ceiling, have his "team" come out to replace the rotted wood and paint those areas when the porch door was installed and all this would be on Wednesday July 31. July 24th is the last I saw or heard from him.
That very evening of 7/24 I received a knock at the door. It was one of the painters. He wanted to know if I had contact information for Danny Jones. The painter said the day I had given DannyJones the balance of my payment, he had given the Painters some money, but not the agreed to amount for the work done to that point and that since there more work done after that day the two painters were owed more money. The painter said Danny had not answered either of the painters telephone calls or text messages. During the conversation I found out this job is the first time either painter worked for American Paint Masters ( Danny K Jones President ) and that the painters did not know each other prior to the first day on the job. I guess I lucked out in a way... since the insurance work was done right and on time--- otherwise I would not have had time/money to fix prior to cancellation of my homeowners insurance.
July 31 came and went. I have tried to reach Danny Jones by text, cell phone and office number more than 12 times. I even went to the address on his business card (Place looks deserted and is up for sale). NO REPSONSE.
Danny Jones came off as a mature, honest person...a real down to earth nice guy. I let down my guard, as normally I would have not given the balance of the contract price prior to every little detail being done to my satisfaction. An error I will never repeat.
I have since found on the internet by searching American Paint Masters where someone near Venice FL recently had an experience with American Paint Masters Inc of Bradenton Fl . You may want to check it out for yourself. Also the information on Angie's List says American Paint Masters has been in business since 1991. Bizapedia listing for American Paint Master Inc Bradenton FL of February 2013 that says the company is 6 months old. Hmmmm..........
